Delegates To Federation
Aroused Over Straub
Expulsion
Han Fruncisco, Nov. 10. Honted ar
guments were expected today by dole
gates to the American Federation of
Labor convention, in session here, when
the controversy between the Chicago
Federation of Lubor ami the executivo
council of the American Federation
over the council's order for the explu
sion of L. 1'. Mrnub comes up. Htraub
led the sympathetic strike of the Chi
cago stereotypers when the pressmen's
union struck against the Hearst pa
pers in Chicago.
A fight is expected to be made by
the council against the appeal of the
Chicago Federation. In its appeal, the
Chicago body defends Struub in this
mnnner:
"L. 1'. .Straub 'a record in the labor
movement, before anil after his alleged
expulsion from the International Stere
otypers and Electrotypers union, con
stitutes a manifestation of heroic ad
herence to tho fundamental principles
of trado unionism. This ought to en
title hi mto tho comniendiition rather
than the censure and furthor punish
ment of tho American Federation of
Labor.
"Hope was held out today for a com
promise between the United Laborers'
Union and the A. F. L. on the refusal
of the union to reduce its initiation fee
from $10 to 5, with a corresponding
increase in dues. Officials of the union
are inclined to bo conciliatory. They
will introduce a set of resolutions out
lining tho union 'b objection to tho or

Spray To Prevent
Damagejo Prune Trees
The following article w ritten by C. O.
Constable, Marion county fruit inspec
tor, is of special interest to fruit grow
ers iinil particularly those owning prune
orchards:
Owing to the loss to the growers by
brown rot, cylindrosporium leaf spot
and tho syneta nlbidn insect during the
pnst season I have taken the matter up
for our mutual interest, with Prof.
Bnrss 11 ml Prof, Posey, of the Oregon
Agricultural college, with u view of
learning the best method of control.
I'nlesH you havo observed very cure
fully you do not rculizo the extent of
damage that has been .done by the
above.
The cylindrosporium leaf spot by
causing the leaves and fruit to fall in
mid summer, the loss of fruit and un
marketable condition nt drying time by
brown rot, and the eaten foliage 11 1 1 1
ono sided imperfect and unmarketable
I cherries and prunes by the syneta al-
bulu bug.
Wo have outlined for the orchards
that I am interested in ns follows:
Cylindrosporium Leaf Spot,
Plow all leaves under as deep as the
roots will permit soon us possible.
Spray.
1. Bordeaux mixture 4-4-50 when
leaves first appear.
2, Bordeaux mixture 4-4 -BO every
three weeks until rniiiv season is over.
Brown Rot.
1. Bordeaux mixture 4-4-50 when
buds first open.
2. Bordcuux mixture 4-1-50 soon n
petals fall.
3. Bordeaux mixturo 4 4-50 three
weeks later.
4. Bordcuux mixture 4-4-50 one
month before picking time.
Synets Albida.
When this bug appears wo will add
to the above sprays, two pounds of ar
senate of lead to 50 gallons of the bor
deaux mixture, which wo think will con
trol it at the same time we are spraying
for the other trouble. In fact wo be
lieve that, the spraying can be so timed
that tho three can bo controlled at the
sumo rprayings.
