SEVEN VEAGS?? i wowr believe! rr i tell you Uwte a Month ago Since uje syac?vep DODGING THE fneST INSTALLMENT MAN - Baby Home Asks Aid Thanksgiving Portland, Oregon, November 1, 1915. Mr. Editor and Proprietors: As you may know, there is an insti tution in Portland called "The Baby Home," which was incorporated twenty-six years ago nnd which has done most excellent work, ns we be lieve, in the care of babies under three years of age. This institution is sup ported in part by the state of Oregon, out tno principal support has come trom the citizens in nnd about Portland, al- j though the inmates of the home are i brought to us from every county in the ! state. Wo receive no pay from the ' father or mother who places the child in the home, as in doing bo wo would receive nothing from the state. Some times they show their appreciation by making small donations. ino expense ot running the homo is about $1000 per month. There are sixty babies there, a superintendent, seven or eight day nurses, one night nurse, one Iniindrymnn and- the yardman. Our premises occupy about three acres in the outer portion of the city just south ot Munnysnle. We nro not In debt but we have to raise about $450 each month to pro vide salaries (the officers of the board receive no pay), food, hcatinir. lichtinir and necessary appliances about the nome, costing us last year $18.05 per month for each child. This you may think is u high fiiruro, but wo are un der state supervision and subject to state inspection, and the state insists on the most modern appliances, exper ienced nurses, and everything that tends to the latest system in the care of babies. As a result, these little ones ,nlthough coming to us poorly nourished nnd sometimes of poor par entage, soon grow into life nnd activity and are adopted out into good homes where they become excellent citizens. In the twenty-six years of our ex istence as a baby homo we have cared for more than 1100 of these little ones. Our death rate is the lowest of any institution of its kind In the United States. The average number in the home is sixty. The average number received each month is ten, and tho nvcrnge numner given out either for adoption or returned to one or both patents is about the sumo. Our desire is to givo some sort of publicity to these facts thut tlio people throughout the state of Oregon may know there is such a vulunble institu. tion in their midst, and that they may ieei auu co-operate in tho work of it. At our last nicotine it was thought a letter might be nddrcssed to each of the moro enfluentiul journals of the state asking that on Tliunksgiving Day wo miijlit be trivcn a Shower: not a shower of rain, but a Shower of small things necessary for the home, such ns clothing, food supplies, includ ing flour, fruits, jellies, etc., or money (and tuture endowment), as some mav prefer to send checks in small amounts, any of which would be very acceptable at this time. Tho home is non-sectarian. Thanking ynu in advance for anv aid you may give us, wo are, Very truly yours, T. S.' AKIN, Secretnry. Address tiaidumcs to 111 llnunl Avenue, Portlnnd, Oregon, und letters to 023 Chamber of Commerce, Port land, Oregon. SEAMAN LAW IN EFFECT TODAY. Washington, D. (,'., Nov. 4.
