Washington, D. C, Oct. 20. Cheese,
butter, and other butter fats are again
becoming important factors in our ex
port trade after a long period of com
parative inactivity. Fifteen or 20
years ago the United States was selling
abroad between 20 million and 30 mil
lion pounds of butter from 50 million
to 80 million pounds of cheese, and
from five million to 10 million pounds
of imitation butter anminllv. In later
years, however, exports of this class do- j
creased in a marked degree and in the
fiscal year 1914 had fallen far below I
the quantities named. In the year just
ended there was a distinct revival in all
these lines, with totals closely approxi-
mating the high levels touched in too
decade from 190 to 1900.

1915 went to nearly 10 million pounds.
During this period imports of butter
were reduced by more than one half ,
falling from a little less than eight mil
lion pounds in 19.14 to less than four
million pounds last year.
American checso, running at about
two and a half million pounds a year,
went to 54 million younds in the fiscal
year 1915. Here also, as in the ease
of butter, the trsde balance was trans
ferred to the export side, for the year's
imports of eheose last year only totaled
50 million pounds, a decrease of 13 3-4
million pounds from the total for 1911.
Exports of condensed milk, usually
exported In sums valued at between one
million and two million dollars annual
ly, in 1915 rose to three million dol
lars in value, the quantity (37 million
oounds) being double Thai of 1914.

able quantities of American butter;
Panama and the West Indies are im
portant markets for our cheese; while
Cuba, Belgium, the Netherlands, China,
Jnpan, Hongkong, Russia, Chosen,
Panama and Hrnr.ll take large amounts
of American condensed milk.
These exports, while important, rep
resent a very small proportion of the
annual products of the 60 million cattle
on American farms, valued at more
than two and s third billion dollars. As
long ago as 1909, the latest period cov
ered by tho national census, we pro
duced 1,(119 million ponnds of butter,
321 million pounds of cheese, and 5.X14
million gallons of milk.liile the quan
tity of oleomargarine on which intern
al revenue tax was paid in 1914 aggre
gated 142 million pounds.

Pacific Salmon In
New England Streams
Numerous reports have been received j
by the bureau of fisheries confirming
early indications that a run of hump
back salmon has been established on
the coast of Muiue. The fiah that have
been observed are the fimt results of
plants made in February, 1914. The
humpback salmon is s. rapid grower,
and attains full maturity in two years.1
For this reason, and because of its high
value as a food fish when taken in
suit water or when fresh run from the
sea, the bureau selected this species for
introduction into selected New England
streams. Many fish weighing five to
seven and n hnlf pounds have been tak
en or seen in Penobscot river, Maine,
and 20 wen captuied alive by agents
of the bureau near Bangor and held in
an effort to obtain ripe eggs. From
two or tlieK9 fish 3,000 eggs were taken
on September ft rnd, after fertilization,
sent to the Craig Brook hatchery for in
cubation. Accounts of tho appearance
of this nw fish in various minor rivers
have eomo in. (.nd in the Dennvs river
there was a l.rteworthy run which be
gan as early as August 15 and was con
tinuing as late n Keptember 24. The
local fishermen caught and ato largo
numbers, and dining the woek of Sep
tember 20 an employe of the Green
Lake hatchery took J5 fish (eight
males and seven females) which had
passed through the fishways in dams in
Dennys river and were dropping down
stream in a spent condition; at the
same time both live and dead fish were
observed below the dams.
