Sunday morning in the First Presby
terian church, tho pastor, Carl H. El
liott, spoke to his junior congregation
on God '8 being more anxious about
what we are than about what we wear.
His text was "Man looketh upon tho
outward appearance, but the Lord look
eth upon tho heart."
air. hlliott snowed two small boxes,
one a neat brown plush one and the
other a common card board one, and
asked which of them the boys and
girls would choose if they were given
tneir choice. Inev preferred the plush
one. Then the boxes were opened and
in tho pliisu one was n common little
brass ring such as is used for light
curtuins and in the card board box was
found a handsome gold baud ring.
We arc apt to judge just that wav.
by the outward appenranco while God
wno sees so much itioro deeply than wo
do judges nccording to the inward con
tents and worth, said the preacher.
We ought to learn to judge people
according to what tiiey arc and not
merely according to tho clothes they
wear.
Twenty-five years ago in a town in
Ohio, n young daughter of a widow
was struggling to finish tho high school
course. Her mother had to work hard
and save stingily and so the girl had to
wear only a calico slip without oither
style or fit, and was often shunned by
the other girls because she looked so
queer. Jiut after a while she graduated
with first honors and has been a very
successful high school teacher in one
of the Ohio's smaller cities for twenty
years, supporting her niotner in com
fort until her death. One who judged
that poorly dressed girl by her outward
appearance failed to see what God saw
n girl of pluck and perseverance
whose goodness and worth were to be
come known to more than a score of
high school classes. ,
We ought also to endeavor to be the
right sort of persons within rntiier than
only on the outside. Not that God
would have us slovenly in our dress. Ho
who made the rose anil pansy so beau
tiful is pleased to have his children
neat and pretty. But he would huvc us
remember th;t tho important part is
not the outside but tho Inside, not
what we wear but whnt wo are.
He would have ns remember that
prettv neckties and ribbons nnd dresses
are not nearly so important as always
telling the truth, hemg honest on tne
playground ami in the school room, and
cheerful, unselfish and helpful about
our home.
