Herbert The fifty-third annual state fair opened this morning with the usual fair weather and the flooUof Immuni ty that rang up fares, . the turn stiles scattered out to tliir machinery exhibit, the livestock barns, the in dustrial exhibit and thronged through the new pavilion which was jammed full of agricultural and varied indus tries exhibits. The open air and free features w-ere improved for this year and H. K. Munter is scheduled to make dnily flights in his aeroplane during the fair. If the conditions for starting and landing are favorable Munter will even tuke up a lady passenger, so he says, and some of Saiem'a fair sex may be given a chanA- look over the cily from the rT'of view of the bird. Today is children 's day and the youngsters under 14 are admitted free and not a few took auvanmge ui me two bit reduction because they will be obliged to contribute a quarter tomor row unless they can .nvlnee the gate man that they are under 10 years of age. As usual there were some of the exhibitors who had been to other fairs and had not yet ploced their booth in final shape but by tomorrow the fair will be running in all of its glory. One department, however, was all there and the largest ever collected in the history of the Oregon state fair, that is the livestock department. The cattlo ex- j hibit is showing Shorthorns, Hercfords, Holsteins, Polled AngiiSj Bed Tolled,; Brown Swiss, Guernseys, and Jerseys. In the Jersey line almist ny breed is shown as there are over 20 exhibitors. The Standard bred horses include Amer ican carriage horse's, saddle horses. high school, Hhetlunds, roudsters, audi French Coach, German conch, Hack neys, Purcherou, Belgian, English Shires Clydesdales and also' a fine exhibit of mules it was out on parade this morn ing. The Bheep entries are Shropshires, Dorest Horns, Hempshire, Southdowns, Cxford downs, Cotswolds, and Lin coln. The swine are Durocs, Berk shire, Poland Chinas, Chester Whites, Yessex, Hampshire, and a herd of Tain worth from Farragin, Towa, exhibited by J. B. Mackey. J. E. Mct'elp of Monmouth, has also begun answering a never ending string of questions about his mule footed hogs. The raceB proved to be the principal attraction this afternoon and although the track was heavy the races were started promptly ot 1:30. The officials arc: Starter, W. P.
