Sneaks On Ten Prophets
In Series of Addresses
Rev. Carl H. Elliott, pastor of the
First Presbyterian church in his sermon
Sunday morning begun a series of
addresses on the 10 prophets of Israel.
In a preliminary statement, Mr. Kl
liot said that for his authority on this
series of sermons, ho hud tnken first
the Bible, and then two books, one by
Dr. A. I). Davidson nnd the other by
Willurd J. Beecher, of Auburn Semi
nary. The word prophet, said the speaker,
was from Oreelt words meaning to
speak for, and did not necessnrily mean
thnt a prophet slim, Id tell future events.
Prophets often prophesied or foretold
events that did nut come to pass. Fore
telling events was nur the primary ob
jects of the prophet! of Israel.
The foretelling of an event was
merely the memo- to an end, and Was
often employed by the prophets to bring
the children "f Israel to obedience.
Prophet! were independent of any org
n ni .nt ion, and according to history were
to be found among the shepherds and
common people as well as among kings.
According to the Bible record, proidi
ets received message from God eitlier
by drenms or vision, but the main thing
was to be able to interpret a dream,
rather than to receive a message in a
dream.
Tnken as a whole, Mr. Klllott was of
the opinion that the special work or
mission of the prophets was to keep the
children of Israel in line with God's
will, and to hold tlicm true to the teach
ings of Moses. Also to keep alive
among the people, the idea of God, as
the God of Isriiel, aiirl that the God of
Israel was a righteous God. Their mis
sion was to tcuch the people the true
way and to plead with them to walk ju
the way of .iciiovan.
But 1 reading and speuking of proph
ets, Mr. Klliott emphasized the fact
that they should be thought - of as
statesmen, reformer! end builders of
mankind.
