How an apparently innocent shaggy coated dog provea to be a I'crmnn spy, wns told todny by wounded Canadian sol diers arriving from the front in North ern Frnucc. Ncnring the firing line there stood a coffee housu inhabited by fivo per sons including a little boy. On their way to the trenches the soldiers often stopped for refreshments, the occupants t ti,n rffii linnse thus havintr excel lent opportunity to collect valuable in formation regarding the troops in the neighborhood, fcingularly the Cnnndl ma ..Wrved thnt lln ir evcrvmove was known to the Germans in tho opposite! trenches. - In one' instance a regiment of Canadian troops moved unexpectedly to reliove a regiment of Scottish Cam- erons. Even the SroittBh officers were i nnawaro of the coming of tho Canadi- ans. No sooner, however, than tho Cana-1 dinns had taken their posts tho Uermans shouted across to them: "Hull, Canadians; ome out and fight." The coffee house was immediately suspected. It wns the only place to sus fmim! nnthinir. Later. however, a Canadian suldier loitering in the neighborhood of the eoffeo house heard conversation m German. Ho quickly informed sonic comrades and a second rni.l was made. Like the first it availed nothing, r'inftlly one of the soldiers resorted to bluff. The little boy then gave up th- secret. The dog had been conveying messnges to the German line. The Canadians had often seen the animal wandering about the i,,.i,n on.l hint often liatted it. An investigation proved that the nnimul! wore ft false coat or siinggy nntr. inncr this the messages were placed ry the nil's in the coffee house and the dog trotted calmly off to the German trenches, where he always round rest and food with the Germans. The soles were arrested. Their fate Las not been told. (Capital Journal Special Service.) Silverton, Ore., Sept. 20. Mrs. J. K.
