County Judge Clark, of Columbia county, was present at the meeting of the board and asked for a total of .oo,000 from the highway com mission, .f.')i),()i)U for Raiuer hill and ' $25,00(1 for the completion of the work in Beaver valley. Judge Clark stated . that his county had voted n five mill tax for roads last year and that this amount had been raised by the tax pay ers and had been expended on the roads. "If you give us $55,000 from the state highway fund it will act as a stim ulus to the tax payers of Columbia county," said Judge Clark, "and I have no doubt that next year we can increase the rond tax to 7 1-2 or S mills, to lie devoted to roads. This will make ' nn increase of about $."0,000 for road work in our county." Judge Clark went on to state that there had been a heavy burden of road taxes in Mr county and that the tax payers must receive a substantial stim ulant to put them in a frame of mind to forget the. past and to look to the future and pungle up more taxes. Raiu er hill, he said, was a link of the Colum- lua highway that was in bad nouditioii I and as it was on one of the principal ', highways of the county as well as a part of Columbia highway its improve ment would be of local value as well as state importance. The judge also promised that a three mile cut off from Scappoose would be opened up ir tne state highway com mission would appropriate the "money for Rainer so that the funds of the county now available could be used else where. After discussinc the mntter tin highway commission decided to appro priate the !p).00O needed for Rainer hill but the ,25.IIOO asked for Beaver valley was nut appropriated. 1'pon the resolution of J.
