from San Francisco and $5.00 a day for 5 days
while visiting the great fair. This contest closes
the fourth event Agnes Bayne, Dora Richter and
Maud Smith were the winners in the first, second
and third contests Tonight's returns will decide
the winner for the fourth. The September con
test, the fifth and final event commences Monday
and should bring a number of entries. It costs

J. H. Brooks, the next postmaster of
Silverton, was in the city yesterday.
He will assume the duties of postmaster
on September 1, succeeding K. U. Allen,
who has been postmaster for a term
of four years und six months, having
been appointed by President Taft, Air.
Allen will engage in the garage and
repair business, with his brothers. The
commission of Air. Brooks is a recess
appointment, and subject to confirma
tion by congress which meets the first
Alonday in December.

H. Morziziensykey, the man who was
arrested by the Salem police on a
charge of breaking open a freight car
was released this morning upon infor
mation received from the railroad de
tective, Barney McShane. It appears
that nothing was taken from the car
and no loot was found upon tho pris
oner when he was searched, AlcShane
has just returned from southern Oregon
where he has been conducting the hunt
for Hooper, the holdup man who held
up the sheriff and escaped from jail
with the sheriff's gun.
