Seem To Hide No Oil
Reported Seeps of Both Oil and Gas
Are All Examined In Vain for Pay
ing Indications, says Geologist.
The chance of getting oil in coinuier
cial quantities in western Oregon is
very slight, ncciirding to W. C. Wash
Inline, a I'niversity of Oregon graduate
In geology, of the class of l!MI."i who las
made u report to the I'nitcd States geo
logical urvcy. Mr. Wnslibul'ne lias des
cribed all reported seeps of oil and
gus, and gives mi account of his re
search work by counties.
lie snys many seeps of oil have been
reported from practically every western
Oregon county, but that most of the
material described as oil proved on in
vestigation to be merely oxide, sub
stance that when present, in water in
annate amounts tonus an irndcsceiit
scum that looks much like nil oil film.
His report says in part:
"In some places in western Oregon
the rocks contain tiny globules of oil,
anil in others they lire cut by veins of
solid, brittle oil residue, but nowhere is
liquid oil known to seep out tit the sur
face. The solid residues indicate only
that oil was at one time present in the
rocks, but it does not necessarily menu
that oil occurs in quantity in rocks at

A WOMAN DOCTOR
says, "Eugenics is a necessary factor
in the future of the nice. The average
American girl is unlit for motherhood,"
This may be true, but if weak and ail
ing girlti passing from girlhood to wom
anhood would only relv, as thousands
do, upon I. yilin E, I'iukhnin ' Vegetable
Compound thai simple remedy made
1 from roots and herbs to restore the
system to u normal healthy condition, it
would cause many ills from which they
suffer to disappear, so that motherhood
might become the joy of their lives.
the present time. The nbsenee of oil
seeps is the most discouraging feature
in this field, for the rocks are bo broken
that it seems highly improbable that
much oil could occur In them and still
not leak out nt the mirt'neo and form
'seeps. The possibility of obtaining oil
hy drilling is rcgarileil as slightly luvor
able In places iu Coos, Douglas, Lin
coln ami I. line counties, but oven thei'o
the chances are not good."
A careful study of nil tho known oc
currences of gas in western Oregon
shows thnt the chances for getting com
mercial quantities are no belter than
for oil, adds Mr. Wnslibiirne.
