Advice on Caring for Chicks
fARTNQ (or and feeding chicks la
f not a difficult process when
once the fundamentals are
learned. There ara many different
methods of caring for and success
fully raising chicks. In fact, nearly
as many as there ara chick raisers.
First of all, II we wish to raise a
good percentage of the chicks
hatched, we must have healthy,
rigorous chicks to start with. We
cannot expect to hatch a good per
centage of poor, weakly chicks. To
got those big, husky fellows
must look back and see what the
parent stock was that laid the eggs
from which these ehicks were
hatched. Unless the parent stock la
healthy and rigorous, we cannot ex-
pect to hatch strong, vigorous chicks,
no matter what methods of Incuba
tion we may follow.
- Never use pullets as breeders, as
they will not produce as strong
chicks as will yearling or two-year
oM hens. The proper method of
feeding and housing must also ba
taking Into consideration.
As for proper methods of feeding,
as far as our experience Is con
cerned, we advise keevlng a good
dry mash before them at all times,
composed of cornmeal, middlings.
wheat bran, and 10 per cent meat
scraps. Avoid feeding wot mashes,
of you want strongly fertilised eggs.
Keep a good supply of grit, shells
and charcoal before them at all
times. Give the breeders plenty of
out door exercise, and on cold .or
stormy days, when confined to tlie
house, throw their grain in six or
eight Inches of goood clean litter, so
they can warm up by exorcising In
scratching for It Plenty of good,
clean water ehould always be within
reach.
I do not believe there la any one
of practical exporionce who would
not recommend the freuh-alr or
opon-front house. I have learned
from my own experiece that fresh

Stronger fowls.
Eggs intended for hatching pur
poses should be carefully handled
and never .oxposod to heat or cold.
In solecting eggs for hatching al
ways ate those of medium size. The
extromoly large ones generally pro
duce cripples while the small ones
produce weaklings, as a rule. As
regards setting a hen, this wa con
sider a very simple tnattor and wa
believe everyone, or nearly every
one, can sot a hen all right, but a
few hints may ba of nsa to some
Bne. Tut the nest on the ground,
to that the hen can easily get on
and off. Put a shovel of dirt In
bottom of box and then put fine
straw on top of this. It in winter
It la well to first line tha box with
paper to keep out, tho draughts.
Sprinkle nest and hen with good lie
powder to rid both of ilea. Do not
givo more eggs than aha can cover
nicely, which la usually from 11 to
IS egga, depending on sle of hen
and weather conditions. Provide a
float bath for tha sitting bena and
teed plenty of whola corn. Dost

wUh sulphur or good lice powder.
As for running an Incubator, tha
bout advice we can give Is to fol
low the manufacturer's dlrerctlona
to the lotter. Tha man who makes
the Incubator knows, or ought to
know. Just how hit machine should
ba run to give boat results, so It Is
noedlost for ns to offer any sug
gestions. Out don't always blame
the mnchino for pior hatches. First
be sure yoa have dona your part

After tho chicks arrive, do not ba
In a hurry to feed them, but give
them nil the water they wish to
fl rink. Many people want to ba kind
to tholr chicks and feed them too
soon nflnr hatching. ThU earty
feeding probably causes mora chick
Alsordors nnd losa than anything '
know of. After the chicks ara about
Q hours old, wa give thein all tha
beef scraps and dry bran they can
ant for tha tint two days and noth
ing else but grit
After tha second day wa feed
them tha following: two parts fine
ly cracked corn, ono part cracked
wheat, one part mixed millet seeds.
This ration la fed until tha chicks
ara Ova weeks old. After that we
feed them a grain mixture of two
parta whola wheat one part cracked
corn, and one part buckwheat We
also have dry bran and beef scraps
In hoppers and let them have ao
cess to It at all times. Green food
la absolutely necessary to keep them
in condition. During tha early
spring, before any grass can be had,
wa teed sprouted oats, which is
greatly relished by both chicks and
old fowls.
After tha chicks are old enough
to sit on a roost wa let them run
together and roost In one large
roosting ' room which la usually a
part of tha large laying house. At
this time we feed them grain In six
inches of good, clean Utter and in
this manner Induce exercise, which
means strong, vigorous pullets.
Keep tha chicks and fowls free
from lice, as lies ara tha chicks
greatest enemy. Dust them at least
onca a week with a good powder.
especially In hot weather. When the
chickens are about six weoks old, cull
out -tha least promising specimens
and prepare them for market by
placing them In an enclosure, slight
ly darkened and feed all the corn
and buckwheat they will eat for a
week or two, not neglecting water
and grit D. W. Ooodllng.
