Tills is the Rrado of wheat that coptnred a $1,000 prize against world
competition thrco years npo and recently won first priio and sweepstakes
t the Wichita, liunsas, International boil rrouuctfl imposition.
ONCE MORE the wheat ruised by
Seagor Wheeler has brought
distinction and fume to the
llttlo town of Hosthcrn, Saskatche
wan, on the Canadian Northern rail
way, between Saskatoon and Prince
Albert. For tho third time In three
years has Western Canada wheat
went aside all competition and cap
tured the first prize. At the recent
International Soil Products Exhibi
tion held In connection with the In
ternational Dry Farming Congress ut
Wichita, Kansas, Seager Wheeler, of
Itosthern, Sask., was awarded the
first prize and sweepstakes for the
best bushel of wheat. Be also took
first for flax. Seager Wheeler Is the
:lame man who throe years ago cap
tured the Sir Thomas Shaiighnessy
1000 purse for tho best wheat ex
hibited at New York against compe
tition from all parts of the world.
Seager Wheeler says he "breeds'
wheat. He takes any new variety of
grain or the best that he has grown
himself In the past season and sets
it out In trial plots. With the best
grain so produced he sets out his
fields, continuing his. breeding until
he is satisfied he has prize wheat
"Constant care and experimentation"
is what Wheeler urges on those who
want to raise good grain. Ills farm
near Hosthcrn Is only a short dis
tance from the Canadian Northern
station and well worth a visit. A
number of well known agriculturists
from the United States have viKitcd
Wheeler's farm and proclaimed the
land to be equal to the highest
priced lands In any part of the
United Slates.

NE dairyman produced $2,000
worth of milk from 20 cows,
or $100 per cow; a neighbor
bestowed twice as much labor on 40
cows and sold only J1.800 worth of
milk, or (45 per cow, barely paying
expenses, while the first man made
a profit of over $1,000.
Yet the second man said he bad
no time to spend a few minutes each
day weighing and testing the milk
from each cow. .
Instead, he spent four long, weary
years In raising and harvesting crops
on a 160-acre farm and feeding and
milking 40 cows to make as much
profit as his neighbor did In one
year with half the cows, half the
lands and half the labor.

YOU WANT THE
breed of dairy cows, but It Is
as Important to Improve the breed
of farm horses and much less Is said
bout tho matter. It Is surprising to
learn that In Wisconsin, known a3 a
dairy state, the horses of tho state
are worth much more than the dairy
cows. Efforts have been made In
that state to Improve Uie breed of
horses used, and a long campaign
has brought the horses to a high
Talue and efficiency.
The first thing to do Is to dls-
eourago tho use of scrubs as breed
ing stock. This is difficult to do, for
tho owners of scrubs are too often
eager to employ every argument In
their power to persundo tho fnnner
to allow service from the mongrel
The chief argument Is the low cost
ef service.
When tho farmer realties the In
creased value of his stock when de
scended from pure bred Btalllons,
tho service cost Is Uie least of his
troubles. With the use of pure bred
animals for sires In New Jersey, the
difference In selling value Is aptly
Illustrated by tho stalomcnt of a
fnrmer there. He laid:
"After using a pure-bred aire, 1
find I can get 40 per cent more for
my colts."
Stick to One Breed.
Thoro are somo things which the
farmer should remember bofore he
tali out to Improve his horse stock.
He should salot't tho particular
breed which he admires most, or
which for somo other reason ha de
cides to use, and stkk to that breed.

For most farmers, the practical
way Is to grade up by using the
marea on his place for brood marcs,
and get pure bred sires. Regarding
til o choice of mares:
Do not breed any mare that Is
deformed, sick, diseased, vicious, un
sound, a poor milker or a cross
mothor. Select the brood mares
cnrefully, taking Bound mares which
have proved serviceable on the farm
and which have the best material
points.
Do not breed to any sire which
Is not purebred. Bnt this Is not the
only quaNflrntton; tho stallion
should be sound, muscular and pre
potent. Do not make the mistake
of picking out tho fattest stallion.
Hulk 1b good, but It should not be
fut. The stallion In Bhow condition
Is not In the best breeding condi
tion. Tho breeding stallion should
be In good work condition; in fair
but not full flosh; active, with
good appetite; and never permit the
use of a stallion which Is unsound,
unsuitable for your purpones on the
farm or partially impotont. Never
out-cross to another breed.
Shelter Mare.
After breeding, seo that the mare-
has proper shelter and feed. This
may save scrubs.' Tho mnro with
foul should have some work, but
not too violent. She Bhould be
favored but not spoiled.
