provides that a census of the stato
shall be made every tea yoars, alter
nately with the federal cansuaes. Sec-'

wiping the law off the statutes en
tirely because, in its present form, it
operates not only as a nuisance, a use
less burden of expense upon the tax
payers and the data that is collected
is never compiled for there is no pro
vision of the statute requiring it.
The Jaw or J sou provides that the
assessors of the several counties take
a census of the population of the state
upon the fifty year of each decade and
to file the results with the secretary
of state. This was done 10 years ago
nnd the reports from the several eoun
ties still lie in the basement of the
stnte house and have never been com
piled for there is no law requiring it
nor funds available to pav for such
work, r . u, Kent, field aaent of the
bureau of crops, of the U. 8. Depart
ment of Agriculture, and a Mr. Jones,
also connected with tho federal depart
ment, held a conference with Mr.
Oleott recently regarding the mat
ter and they advised that, inasmuch
as the government was going to take
an agricultural census of tho state dur
ing the. fall of 1015, the stato statute
requiring a state census every ten yoars
is useless unless it be changed to re
quire that an agricultural census be
taken every year.
