of 1895, according to experts. No wheat
has been cut aside from the small per
cent of winter wheat sown, but a
great deal of winter rye and barley is
being harvested. 'The rye crop is nn
average one, there being soma excep

ley this year appears better than the
late sown barley, this being the reverse
of the usual condition. Some damage
from rust between St. Paul and Aber
deen was reported today by' C. P. Bull,
agronomist of the University of Min
nesota college of agriculture. A party
from Crookston took a 100-mile auto
mobile trip from Crookston and report
ed finding no rust.
While there are a few cases of slip
fhod, haphazard farming throughout
Minnesota the cases are exceptional.'

DOG DRIVES
PAYS VISIT TO MEDFORD
L. Spikes, 83 years old, for years a
miner and dog driver. in. Alaska, spent
Sunday in Medfofd en route to south
ern California where he will spend the
remainder of his life. Mr. Spikes is
retiring after 60 years of struggle in
the wildest and most remote parts of
North America. He wandered to north
ern Alaska at an early date and for 25
years drove a dog team. During this
period he encountered many accidents,
some of a very strange nature. He
tells of being lost for 12 days and hav
ing nothing to eat save hard tack and
raw meat.
After a quarter of a century of dog
driving he took to mining and accord
ing to himself was one of the first to
rob the soil of its riches north of the
city of Nome,
"I have been paid for my struggle,"
said Mr. Spikes, "and am now going
to retire and enjoy all the comforts
this world gives."
