ing asked of the commission on in lus-
tnal relations, bv Dr. Theresa Mc-
Mahon of the social science department
of the University of Washington and a
former member of the minimum wage
commission.
'The canneries are Intolerable from
an economic, and filthy from a health
standpoint," she said. By personal in
vestigation she had learned that chil
dren between the ages of 9 and 14 were
employed by the simple expedient of
getting permits from the school superin
tendent. Hovs did men s work pushing
trucks, she declared. Girls work 12 to
lo hours a day, and the men as hiLdi
as 19 hours. Everybody is speeded up
to hiirh gear to keep up with machinery,
She declared that even the Chinese are
giving up this occupation and there is
now less oriental competition than ever,

Girls CannotTestify.
Dr. McMahon declared a girl em
ploye is foolhardy to testify before any
committee or in court, against an em
ployer. In most cases she would lose
her job. At any rate she would lose
the chance for promotion.
"A greater cause for social unrest
today," said Dr. McMahon, "than low
wages and unemployment is the fact
that labor laws generally have loop
holes. The fact that enough is pro
duced, that storehouses are filled, that
the crops are plenty, and people go hun
gry nevertheless, makes this social un
rest. And increased intelligence among
the people will increase the unrest
The remedy lies in publicity, she said,
as industries are more sensitive to pub
licity than to demands of unions.

That the United States will be drawn

just started in Europe is the belief of
Dr. D. N. Mclnturff, lawyer, preacher,
and former missionary to Japan, who
is practicing law in this city, lie be
lieves that the nations are so foverish
and so like a tinderbox that the least
tnadvertanee may throw this couutry
into the maelstrom of war. Ho believes
that Secretary of State Bryan's insis
tance of strict neutrality tor the United
States and the inviolability of China
may precipitate an attack that will
compel the L'uited States to resort to
force.
"This conflict," declared Dr. Mcln
turff, "iiibv be the death struggle of
barbarism in our modern lives and msy
mark the lat great war of the world.
The present couflict was inevitable on
account of the crushing race for arma
ment between the European nations. It
had come to such a pass that someone
must either fight oc throw up the race
and the die was cast for t'igiiting.
Again: If, as the Adveutists be
lieve, this war marks the beginning of
tlio end of the world, the Scriptures
will be fulfilled. It was predicted that
before the end of the world and the
beginning of the millennium, at which
Christ was to make his second appear
anco on earth, there should be wars and
rumors of Wars mid finally ouo great,
world-wide 'conflict,

us can tell. It is practically certain

STEAMERS ON WAY TO
PASS THROUGH CANAL

Will be First Through Canal
San Francisco, Aug. 12. The Amer-icau-Hawaiian
steamer Nebraskan put
out for New York yesterday via the
Panama Canal. She will be the first '
merchantman to pass through the canal,'
from tho Pacific Coast. The Arizonan,
of the same lino, loft New York in the
opposite direction August 4. Traffic
will he received beginning August lo.
The Nebraskan bore many tokens of
fcood will and was nproaringly greeted
by the whistles of all the shipping in
the harbor as she got under way.
GRAIN EXPORTERS ARB
UP AGAINST IT HARD
Now York, Aug. 12. Grain exporters
were to meet here this afternoon to
determine whether to risk breaking con- '
tracts or attempt to deliver 63,000,000
bushels of wheat abroad. ' -
The contracts were based upon ante
bellum prices, and the exporters stand
to lose enormously because of heavy
insurance and exorbitant rates of trans
portation now in effect.
John Bassett Moore, chief counsel for
tho North American Grain Export as
sociation and an international law
authority, advised cancellation of the'
contracts.
FIFTY MILES OF WRAPPERS
HAVE BEEN ADDRESSED
Secretary of State Olcott said yester
day that a majority of tho wrappers for 1
the election pamphlets to bo sent to
273,000 persons hud been addressed.
The wrappers are 13 inches long, and
Kir. Olcott S deputies have figured that,
if they wero pasted together, they
would more than stretch from here to
Portland, which is about 50 miles.
Mr. Olcott has an addressing ma
chino similar to those used by news
papers. If the old-style method of ad
dressing wrappers by hand were em
ployed it would take a corps of clerks .
weeks to do the work. .
