SETTLEMENT TO BE MADE OUT
OF COURT, ANNOUNCEMENT
San Francisco, May 12. Action in a
suit brought under the civil clause of
tho Sherman anti-trust act by the Pa
cific States Trading company against
tho Aluska Codfish compauy and the
Union Fish company, San Francisco
concerns, to recover ailleged damages
of $250,000 was halted in United
Spates Judgo Van Fleet's court today !
by nn announcement that a settlement '
was about to bo made out of court. It :
was said the defendant companies had
agreed to pay the Pacific States Trad- i
ing company $80,000. Judge Van1
Fleet gave the plaintiff and the de-1
fendaiits two days in which to report
satisfactory settlement.
It wag allegod by the Pacific States
company that written agreement be
tween the two defendant companies to
manipulate prices in restraint of trade
forced the plaintiff company to sell to
the defendant companies 1,000 tous of
codfish in 1908 far below the normal
price. It was also declared that crim
inal proceedings against the defendant
companies probably would be at
tempted by government authorities un
der the Sherman anti-trust act.
Mr. and Mrs. A. P. Moise, Bert
Moise and Mrs. Ida M. Gray motored

THERE IS HAIR BEAUTY
IANCE EN
Did you ever havo a dealer offer yon
a large bottle of something nnd tell
you it was a better remedy for the
hair than Newbro's Herpicide, and
cheaper because in a larger bottle ?
Whatf Certainly we knew you had.
Many other people have, too. -
What would you say to that same
dealer were he to tell yon that a silver
dollar were worth more than a five-dollar
gold piece because it is larger!
Such nn attempt being a reflection
upon your good sense, you would prob
ably say some rather pointed things to
him. You would be justified. Your
self-respect would demand it.
Well, there are just as many good
reasons for the difference in size be
tween those bottles as there are for
t,he difference in size between the sil
ver dollar and the five-dollar gold
pieee.
The truth is that the large bottle
isn't half largo enough.
There is more virtue in a half pint
of Xewbro's Herpicide than in a gal
lon of some of the so-called hair pre
parations. There is a dollar's worth of results
in the bottle of Herpicide, but do you
know what is in the other!

SAYS BANKERS WILL FIGHT
THE ANTI-TRUST MEASURE
Pasadena, Cul., May 12. That bunk
ers all over the country will be found
fighting nguinst the new administra
tion anti-trust measure or for an
amendment to that measure, when they
fully realize what it means, is tho
opinion of A. E. Edwards, former pres
ident of the California Bankers' As
sociation. The prohibition of interlocking di
rectorates, he said today in a public
address, will force a completo reorgan
ization of the savings bank business
of the country, because such banks aro
now directed largely by directors of
national banks, and this, he believes,
will be illegal under tho bill as it
now stands.
