, LOCAL MARKETS.
The prune question is still unsettled,
though the generally accepted estimate
is half a crop. It is probable it will
bo better than this. The habit of the
Italian of dropping and thinning for
itself always causes the belief that it
will drop about all its fruit, but it gen
erally comes to the front with a fairly
good crop under any nnd all conditions.
The mohair market in Oregon is done
for this year, all clips but a few strag
gling ones having been brought up.
The poultry and dressed meat market
is dejressed due to over-supply, and
prices are weak. The markets are still
well supplied with California straw
berries, but this w?ek will see tuein

AS GODFATHER TO AMERICAN
push the building ot such a city havo
maintained itself in this region 1 The
ruins are located 13,000 feet above the
.level of the sea cn a vast rdateau
where the constant cold prevents the
maturing of corn or other grain. At
present potatoes, oca, nnd some other
edible roots are groivn, but the region
sustains only s scanty mountain popu
lation. The ;iiy once covered a largo
area, the groat structures were built by
skilled masons.' One stone is 36 feet
long by seven feet wide and weighs
170 tons, another is 26 feet by 16, and
6 feet thick. Only the monoliths of
ancient Egypt equal those found in
Tiahuanacu. The movement and plac
ing of such monoliths point to a dense
population, to an organized govern
ment, and consequently to a large agri
cultural area with means of transpor
tation from various directions. The
only tcnenable explanation is that at
the time when Tialmanp.eu flourished
the Andes were fmm 2,000 to 3,000
feet lower than at present; Geologists
hold that in the Jurassic and even in
the Cretaceous period there were no
Andes and that through a gradual up
heavel they have been formed in more
recent geological times. The bones of
a mastodon haVe been discovered in
j minim tic an uiuiuiie or Jd,iwu reet
uuove uie sea, anu sucn an animal
could not have existed at such an ele
vation. Skeletons of gigantic ant-eaters
have been found in the deserts pf
Tarnpaea, and these could only have
existed in regions of arboreal vegota-
inese, nnd other geological fact3,

"A traveler stopping in the little;
town, and ignorant of the proximity of ;
tho ruins, would be astounded to ob
serve the number cf beautifully cut ,
stones built into parts of abode huts
of the most primitive character, and
sometimes forming portions of a sqalid
patio. A doorway to a dilapidated,
thatch-roof hut, may have a lintel or
jamb formed by an artistically carved
stone. In the walls of the little Cath

yard, and even in the paving, may be
seen these smooth stones. The pedestal
on which is mounted the stone crocs in
front of the church is made up of them,
