A SCOTCH MOON.
An old Scottish gardner was showing
to a tourist the beauties of the loch and
of the little village of Duddingston. It
was evening, and as he expatiated ou
the lovely scene, and on the glories of
his country the moon rose over a hill.
Tho old man stopped short in the mid
dle of a sentence and gazed in admira
tion at the moon. Then he turned to
the tourist and said:
"There's a moon for yel I tell ye
mon, we're a grand nation!"
FARMERS' INSTITUTE
CLOSES FOR SEASON.
Madison, Wis., March 13. The last
of a highly successful senson of "Farm
ers' institutes, ' ' conducted under tho
auspices of the extension department of
tho University of Wisconsin, were held
today at Wild Rose, Ardale, Doyles
town, Dawlton, and New Lisbon. Offi
cials in charge of the institutes reported
on tho work that has been done. Their
reports contained high testimonials
from farmors all over the state who de
clare they have received vast benefits
from the system. Wisconsin was the
pioneer in this movement to hold meet
ings in small towns where the farmers
gathered for instruction in practical
and scientific methods of building ud
their farms and increasing their profitj
not only through the development of
larger crops but also through estab
lishment of a better system of reaching
the consumors with their products.

clock dovice early today exploded an
infernal machine secreted in the rear
of a brick bakery in course of construc
tion at Sixth and West streets here. The
bakery is owned by Giachino & Deva
pof, Valuiblo mnchinery was destroyed
and tho daminge may amount to $1000.
No intent to take lives was contem
plated, as a time was chosen when no
one would be in the building.
Tho police believe that revenge was

of reports that part of the jewels
stolen from her homo in Narraganseti
Pier, R. I., last year had been recovered
was voiced here today by Mrs. John
Hanan, wife of the millionaire sh:e
manufacturer. Mrs. Hanan also denied
that the jewels were worth $250,000 as
was reported at the time of their dis

DAM GOES OUT,
Seattle, Wash., March 13. The Fre
mont dam between Lake Union and the
Lake Washington canal went out nt
12:30 o'clock this afternoon and at 1
o'clock this afternoon threatens to
flood a large part of the lowbuids along
the canal right of way between Fre
mont and Ballard. The city's new con
crete bridge over the canal at Fremont
is in danger of being undermined.

the commisison F. N. Derby was called
by City Attorney I'age and testified
that, he and W. H. Grabenhorst Thurs
day and today made an appraisal of the
company's land and fixed the value at
$27,800. Mr. Grabenhorst alBO testified
to the same fact. This property wa
valued at $62,202 by Engineer Doreszki
for the company.
Considerable disappointment was
manifested by City Attorney Page over
the failure of witnesses to appear this
afternoon for the city. He considered
a full effort had been made to got them,
Engineer Haganah thought this was
favorable to the company and showed
that the citizens were not interested in
the matter or else felt favorably toward
the company. Mr. Page expected to get
his witnesses on the stand some time
this afternoon.
