LEGED LAW VIOLATORS.
Governor West has today mailed a
letter to the mayor and city conucil of
Sherwood, protesting against the grant
ing licenses to Fred and Frank Col
felt, saloon keepers, who have, it is as
serted, sold liquor contrary to law. The
governor's letter follows:
"My attention has been callod-to the
fact that Saloonkeepers Fred and Frank
Colfelt aro about to apply to your hon
orable body for a renewal of liquor li
cense in your city.

der seven different indictments for the
illegal sale of liquor, and is now on pa
role on five of said counts, and that
Frank Colfelt was recently fined $200
apd given Bix monthB in jail for a sim
ilar offense, and is now out on parole.

of the laws of the state, I wish to call

lic statement issued yesterday six lum
ber eoinanics representing tho large
lumber interests of this city, announced
thoy would close .their mills hero Sat
urday to reopen later under certain
conditions.
The statement says the mill ownerB
will not tolerate union officers or del
egates or wearers of union buttons
about their plants, but that they will
not necessarily discriminate against
former union members, if they promise
to resume work at the same wages and
under the same working conditions now
existing.
This announcement is the result of
a walkout several days ago at the plant
of the Robinson Manufacturing com
pauy duo to the discharge of a number

North Salem, at Broadway and Market

owners are J. E. Nadon, formerly of
Silverton; G. P. Clerin, until recently
a resident of Portland; and F. W.
Haskins, who has lately arrived from
Snohomish, Washington. All of the
members of he new company which
will conduct the laundry are thoroughly
familiar with the business and hare had
practical experience in it for years. In

Salom was the most promising town tn
the state, and they have come here with
the determination to assist in ita up
building and to become a part of its
commercial activity. .;
As fast as possible the present plant
is to be modernized. Numerous i.m
provoments am already under way and
much new machinery of latest pattern
is to be installed. The building at
present in use is to be remodeled, en
larged and repainted.
An up-to-date cleaning, pressing and
dyeing department is to bo added. The
delivery service is to be improved and
it is expected to make use of auto

Dr. Kimball, who is ono of the lead
ing Methodist ministers of the west, do

south because of his advanced years.

odist church, of Spokane, eight years
ago, Dr. Kimball concoivod the idea
of endowing a Methodist theological
school in Oregon and finally docided
to make it a part of Willamotto univer
sity. Because of this fact tho trustees
of tho school unanimously called him to
the presidency of the collego when it
was opened. This institution hns grown
under his management and ranks high
among colleges of theology. Mrs. Kim
ball hns taken a part in church and so

bo greatly missed.

Commenting on an editorial in the
Oregoniam, Governor West this morning
said:
'I am glad to see the Oregonian
come out and take a stand for an
amendment to the constitution which
will permit the governor to veto single
items in blanket appropriation bills.
Seeing the need of such legislation, I
called the matter to the attention of
the last legislature and an amendment
was submitted to the senate through a
resolution by Senator McCulloch, but
was killed by the Oregonian crowd in
the senate.
"A similar resolution was introduced
in the house by Messrs. Reames and Ea
ton. It passed the house, but was killed
in the senate. ,
"Had the Oregonian raised its voice
with just one word of endorsement the
resolution would have carried, and the
amendment could have been voted upon
and adopted at the last special election.
"Thus we have seen a most meritor
ious measuro go down to defeat through
the position of .Senator 2':ef," the'
Oregonian 's candidate for governor, and
simply because that paper and its
crowd in the Bonate had a personal dis
like for me. v
"Now, that, the Oregonian admits
the need of Buch an amendment, it will
no doubt be anxious to see it placed be
fore tho peoplo through the initiative,
and, in order to holp the matter along,
I will agree to donate dollar for dol
lar with the Orogonian Wards raising
a fund to securo signatures to place tho
measure upon the ballot." ".
