to keep 1,500 men busy 8 hours daily
for a mouth hag been outlined by the
local unemployment reliof committee.
The money to pay them at the pro
posed rate of 20 cents an hour was a
different matter, however. Not much
of it had been pledged. Tho committee
was confident, however, that it would
have been raised by next Monday.
Registration of tho workless was in
progress today. In giving out jobs,
committee men said the proforence
would be shown to married San Fran
ciscans. Married straugers, of whom
there are few, will be provided for next
and then unmarried San Franciscans
and finally unmarried strangers.
By no means all of the unemployed
in the city were willing to work for
$1.60 daily and there was considerable
jeering at those who lined up at tho
co-operative employment bureau to reg
ister. The relief committee's work will con
sist mainly of boulevard construction.
The committee was receiving some out
side requests for labor, however. Sup
erintendent of Parks McLeron said ho
would havo 400 positions to fill Mon
day. Tho Northwestern Pacific rail
road also wanted 55 men at $2 daily
and got them In a few minutes. The
committee; asked the city to begin as
much municipal improvement work as
It could afford and the chiof of police
waa urged to notify all proporty own
ers to clean up vacant lots, as required
by ordinance.
The unemployed havo organized a
policing system of their own at their
sloeping barracks, and several drunks
or othor disturbers were' unceremon
iously bundled out last night and tosR
ed among the brick heaps of tho ruined
city hall.
