Thomas Henry Baker was given a
conditional pardon from the prison to
day. Ho was a dosertor from the ship
Celtic King, and as this ship will be in
the harbor at Portlnnd today, the par
don was grantod so that ho could be
returned to the ship, and deported. This
will save the state the expense of tak
ing care of him, and at the same time
will insure him getting about all the
punishment that is coming to him. He
was taken to Portland this afternoon.
George L. Rose and others, living in
the hop district botween Orvillo and
Sidney hnve had their request for a
station stop at Loowi grantod. Super
intendent Davidson is pushing the work
of filling with gravel and tho construc
tion of a standard platform. Tho lo
cal Oregon Electric trains will begin
making stops nt Loowi for the accom
modation of hop-pickers some timo af
ter tho 15th of August. Tho station is
to be made convenient of access for
handling hop-pickers, their luggage and
supplies that come by electric line.
Rev. R. F. Tischor, 660 Union street,
pnstor of tho Unitarian church, who re
cently arrived in Salem, had a burglar
ns a visitor last evening. The burglar
is supposed to be a youth, and ho
crawled through a window. He was
flashing his lantern around, when Mrs.
Tischer called to him, thinking it was
her daughetr. There was no reply.
Rev. Tischer called in a louder voice.
Evidently badly scared, tho intruder
dashed to the window and made his get
away. Ho secured nothing.

Portlnnd, Eugene & Eastern railway
from Monroe to Corvallis will be held
