Tom Kay, the Portland "detective,"
is in the city and has been for several
days investigating the conditions here
with regard to the sale of liquors and
the manner In which submits aro being

papers, it would seem there was plenty
of work of this kind to keep him busy
at home, but then the salary anil emolu
ments generally (mint unerringly to the
place where doty lies.
Circuit Judge (lalloway will hear evi
dence In Portland this week in the case
to have the petitions for reference to
the people of the workmen's compensa
tion act thrown out on a charge of
fraud. The hearing is expected to last
most of the week. All the witnesses
live in Portland, The case will be ar
gued here. K. U. Dingo is chief counsel
for the plaintiff. It is charged that
signatures to the petitions were obtain
ed thriiugh fraud ami the court is asked
to restrain the secretary of state from
placing the caption of the measure en
the ballots at the special election in
November. Attornoy-Uonernl Crawford
probably will have nothing to do with
the case until it reoehes the supreme
court. Secretary of State Olcott says
fraud must be shown before he can act.
William II. Johnson, of this city, has
been elected president of tho Bank of
Jacksonville, to succoed C. M. Ruch.
Mr. Johnson will dovoto his entire time
to the bank's aiiuirs.

Portland, Or., Aug. 11. In a formal
statement issued today tho Oregon ex
position commission, which returned
from San Francisco Sunday, expresses
great satisfaction with tho sito selected
for Oregon's building at tho Panama
exposition.
On account of the smallness of the
appropriation, tho commission favors
the construction of a log building,
which will make up in individuality
what it lack in costliness.
The commission will endeavor to have
tho Oregon building the first one com
pleted among state structures.
