Owing to complicated evidence the court gave a suspended sentence. The Willamette Prune Growers' Asso ciation held their annual meeting this afternoon at the Salem Fruit Union at 2 o'clock. The meeting wns addressed by Luther J. Chapin, government agri cultural expert, located in this city, on soil preservation. After the address the routine business of the association was taken up. The governor's office has a letter from the Forward to the Land League, with headquarters in Los Angeles, ask ing his co-operation iu the movement to open the sparsely settled portions of the ountry to settlers. The league will hold a national convention in Los An geles August 5 to 9. The state board of control held a meeting this morning to take up the matter of purchasing supplies for the state house officers and the different institutions. Bids for the supplies of the state house will be issued every three months, while for the state insti tutions bids will be called for twice a year, as has been done heretofore. On July 9 the railroad commission will hold a hearing of the ease of the Orego nhotel, of Portland, against the Pacific Telephone it Telegraph com- ny and the Home Telephone. The Oregon hotel, of Portlaud, against the phone companies to connect both of their wires to one switchboard in the hotel, there by saving the hotel the trouble and expense of installing two systems. It is a question whether the railroad commission has the authority to compel such a procedure or not. T. O. Bligh, the genial proprietor of the llligh theatre and all around rater- r to amusement loving Salem folk, is exerting himself today and tomorrow in order to ladle out something new and original to his patrons. The com ission held that his conviction on n felony charge automatically dropped him from membership in the police de pigment. The ruling was based on the supreme cg,urt decision in the S.hmitz case. Bees Came to Town. Portland may be in the swim when it comes to bee bait in the form of roses, but old Salem came to the front in real style this afternoon about 1 o'clock" when a swarm of honey-suckers made an attempt to take up permanent resi dence at the intersection of State and Commercial streets. For a time the more timid pedestrians fought shy of that section of the city, and a spitz drg, belonging to T. G. Bligh, was shooed to safe quarters by the busy lit tle bees. Teamsters also took a notion to steer off in another direction when they noticed the thousands of insects swarming about the corner of the Unit ed State National Bank, while autoists put on the brakes and passed through the swarm at a funeral gait. The Flem ing home here, at No. 257 Prospect Place, is plunged into deepest gloom through the death Sunday, June 1. and burial Thursday of last week of William Fleming, the 73-year-old father of Mrs. j Mabel Watson, of Salem, Ore. The de 5 ceased, who passed away from bron chial influenza, waB a decorator and painter, and had been ill for only one week. The funeral services over his remains were held at his late home Wed nesday evening, and was largely at- :: tended by his friends and neighbors. 3 The attendance was such as to show r the' esteem in which the deceased was held here. The floral tributes of the family and friends were many, and completely filled one side of the room where the casket rested in the front parlor, near the bay window. The cas ket was completely smothered with flowers. The Rev. Dr. .T. G. Snyder officiated. He paid a glowing tribute to the mem ory of the deceased, in which he spoke of him as a man that loved others, and was loved in return.
