Fletcher & Byrd 349 North Commercial St. S : t I I - 4 Clean Up and Paint Up Clean up and paint up it the newest slogan in the city-wide campaign against dirt and dull surroundings. The two go to getherclean up and paint up. Where paint is not needed the clean-up may be needed, and where the clean-up move ment has been in order paint is sadly needed in some cases. Point Is Badly Needed. The clean-up movement is widespread over the city. Some districts already have been passed, and the rubbish and trash has ben removed to dump piles. The surroundings are clean and bright and the property has been improved. In many cases, however, the house needs paint, time and weather having played havoc with them. If the surrounding grounds are clean and beauti ful, the dull contrast of an un painted or weatherbeaten house detracts much from ap pearances. A coat of paint would change things wonder fully, brighten up surround ings, improve and raise the val ue of the property. The plan is to make Salem a city beautiful and clean-up alone cannot do that, although it may help a great deal. Every visitor sizes up Salem by its appearance. A dirty, rusty town appeals to nobody. We must keep Salem from such unsightliness as will cause, people to think we are on the down grade. With other im provements in view, and every body painting and cleaning up their individual premises, Sa lem can command the admira tion of every visitor. Paint your house, your bam, your store, any building you own, that will look neater for a coat of paint. AMERICAN PAINT tt OIL DEALER Si. Many visitors will be here, and citizens want the Cherry City to appear at its best. 1 4 A well directed movement is on foot to g.-t in and have Salem cleaned up and painted up in time for the ( herry X X Fair and Fourth of July celebration. Thi? is au excellent idea, a many visitors will be here, and. while Sa- X X I' ' always attrac tive to the visitor, yet it is the intention to have the city's a; penance even more attractive than usual. The local health officer will c, operate with the citizens, and it is certain that the campaign for cleanliness, which starts at once, will secure most gratifying results. The "clean up and paint-tip" campaign X X started in St. Louis, but has now become national, its good effects in hundreds of lo-slities having quickly bo- come apparent. In speaking of the national campaign, a day or two ago. Mr. Clark, of St. Louis, the originator 4 of the idea, said: ' X X ''The primary object of the "clean up and paint-up' campaign i to establish that five-word slogan everywhere: X X to create in the public mind that sers of intelligent association that will realiie the inadequacy of the firt two 4 words and that subconsciously will link together iuseperably the five words in any mind informed on sanitation, X conservation and benutifiation. ' X "The methods through which this is to be achieved are comprised in an active and thorough national campaign from season to season and year to year, for the oryaniiation of local campaigns 'For Homes an 1 Towns Beauti- 4 ful under whatever mine or local auspice may be chosen for the movement in such towns or eitie. X "The meaning of the campaign and the motive of its supporters may bo various and manifold, according to j nreumstanre and personal temperament. 4 "Lot us see if all these motive are proper and practical and laudable: and whether they are hurtful to any, X I or helpful to every devotee of the community improvement cause, to every citi.-en and to every child that is X growing up into beter conditions for the saner living and the higher aspirations of the new civilization toward which the efforts of practical orgauired altruism are f.valired today as never before in the world's history "This campaign will bring financial benefit to every hjiise-oxner who cleans and paint his propertv pro- terting it against deterioration and increasing its va!ir as a home for himself and others by making it sanitary J X and presentable. Such conservation and increase of value, of that large portion of the national wealth repre- tented in the paintable, but sparsely painted proerty within the Vnitfd States, as would result in such cam- 4 paign waged everywhere from year to year, would stop a present national loss amounting to millions eccrv- X where." -4 ! x - X We Have Caught the Paint-up and Clean-up Spirit! The work mutt be kept up. Nearly every premise in the ciiy now is in excellent: condi tion. The yards have been thoroughly cleaned, and rub bish hauled away. But if care is not taken, the work of Clean-up Month will be forgotten, and another year's accumulation of truck will start. This can be averted if a little work is done occasionally, to pick up and dispose of the things about that will soon be in the rubbish or filth classes. And here is the next step. Let us paint ap Salem. Paint P-a-i-n-t. Paint is beautifying, preserv ative and sanitary. It is not an extravagance r a luxury. It is a necessity. It is an economy. There are a lot of structures in the business section that look as though they had not been painted since Lewis and Clark discovered the Columbia. There are some homes that need painting lot of them. Paint destroys countless mil lions of germs that infest wood. A rotten timber can furnish enough germs to keep a doctor busy for a month. Salem were givne a general painting the health of the community would improve so much that all the doctors could take a month's vacation, without ne glecting the interests of their patients. Gi'i Salem a genral paint ing, and start the spirit of civic pride. The people, instead of ask "(tt "What is the matter with Salem?" will ask "What has happened to Salem?" 4 4 4 4 4 4 .4 4 4 4 4 4 4 4 4 4 4 4 4 4 4 4 4 4 4 4 4 4 4 4 4 4 4 4 4 4 4 4 4 4 4 4 4 4 4 4 4 4 4 4 4 4 4 4 4 4 4 M . t 4tt 4 4 4444 t 4 4 4 4 4 4 4 4 4 4 4 4 4 4 4 4 4 4 4 4 4 4 4 4 4 4 4 4 4 4 4 4
