The halibut beds at Newport are so thickly peculated with the big sea fish, according to reports sent out from that summer resort, that the fishermen are reaping a good harvest so far this sea son. Oscar Bowers, a local sportsman nnd business man, has just returned from a, short sojourn at Newport, ami he de clares that the gasoline boats which heretofore were employed by sightseers and tourists are making more money this year by plying between the shore and the fishing beds. The halibut are found 20 miles from the beach. The boats travel out with the tide and re turn with the tide. Mr. Bowers states that one of the fishermen returns every evening with a large quantity of fish, which he boxes up and ships to Portland. The ship ments leave at 7 o'clock in the morn ing and arrive in Portland about 4:30 in the afternoon, thus making it possible for Portland markets to receive fresh halibut from the sea. Halibut fishing is becoming a great industry at Newport, and when the cold storage plant has been completed at that place, many more fishermen will probably be in the field during the season.
