By Margaret Mason. (Written for the United Press). Waiy, Mary, quite contrary, How goes your garden hatf It goes very well, and is very swell, And it's growing large and flat. Now York, June T.-lowly but sure ly hats are growing and taking on brim. Brimming over in fact, some of them with narrow pleated ruffles of maline. Airily they are taking on this additional width and vastly becoming and sum mery is the effect. Particularly in an all black Milan straw hat with a two inch edge or more of pleated blaclt maline, another niche- of the pleated maline standing tip around the low crown and one lovely La France rose blushing on the floppy brim. All of the new large hats are flat and floppy. Sort of a reversion to the good old pic ture hat, the common garden variety. Just the sort of a garden hat Mary would wear to a roof garden. A roof garden is about the nearest approach to a regular one these so phisticated New York garden hats get a look into, anyway. Their fair wear ers seemingly having a penchant for do ing their gardening down Fifth avenue. If a garden hat nowadays elicited the invitation "Come into the garden, Maude," it would probably mean either beer or roof. Lovely Bomney shapes , of crin are huge of circumference and unbroken of line, save for a soft brocaded ribbon tied around the crown with lengthy loops and streamers trailing down be hind. One shaded leghorn has a wealth of shaded pink tea roses covering the top and a broad old blue velvet band gird ling the chin, and fastening with a rose bud on the opposite edge of the brim. These chin straps, by the way, are quite tha thing on all hats, little or largo. Whether anchoring a quaint lit tle poke bonnet or a full blown shade hat it certainly adds a dash of piquancy to have one's chin or china, as the ease may be, so effectively held in check. The maline ruffle seems quite the fa vorite ruse of the hour to convert the erstwhile wee rhapeau into a life-size If year meals don't texts tight, or you have any dis- i try bottle of HOS TETTERS' Stomach Bitters It tones, strengthens, invig orates promotes better health in every way. Com mence today. hat, and as if the tiny head pieces were gradually putting forth diaph onoua feelers before rashly breaking out into full fledged brims. Many, of the hats are swathed completely in the maline, and this is indeed a lifesaving fashion to veil the sunburned glories of your early spring bonnet with a crisp envelope of rejuvenating tulle, Large Panama straw hats and othors of cool white linen are brightened with cut bordors of appliqued cretonne and embroidery in brilliant tones of orange, green and sapphire. Tiny bunches of vivid Paul Poiret apples gleam biz- zarcly against the crowns and make a stunning top off to yoiiT crisp white linen frock for the canine days. It's time to check your black and white chock skirt. On the square it has become entiroly too omnipresent in jts short and checkered career. Since it is meet that you should have a skirt for your smart black cutaway Mat, try a black serge with an inch wide stripe bisecting it at five-inch inter vals. Cut on the bias and draped well up on one side it is de rigeur and gives quite a slant on your "figger." Quito the newest separate coats for these trotteur skirts have a scalloped edge these days instead of a straight finish. This scalloped effect is being shown on the short taffeta and satin coatees also, the scollops often being ornately braided in hectic hues. With an oyster white coat finished in scollops, an eel tight Bkirt and a rope of fish-skin pearls, one can hardly help but be in the sartorial swim. It's an easy mattor to be a fashion able sunshine girl, but quite another to roiim as Fashion's queen in the raiD. One of the chic new silk raincoats with its cunning cap to match will turn you into a veritable rain dear, however, and when yon raise your smart um brella, yon are suto to be rubbered at. The raincoats are triumphs of art over nature in sofe waterproof silk cut on scant straight li nee. Thev come in lovely tones of raisin, maroon, olive green, taupe, gray and gakelin blue, and the cap to match are in the most captivating shapes. T'mbrellas also have the color craze and are a vivid as thoir relative of brighter days, the festive parasol. In fact, the latest Parisian umbrella has a dual personality, and leads the double life of a gay young parasol or a prop erly raised umbrella, according to the weather. Aeroplane's Growth. Harvard After Brown. Cambridge, Mass., June 7. What ever small chance Harvard might have for the intercollegiate title was at stake today when the Crimson lined up against the strong Brown university team from Providence, R. I. If Brown defeats Harvard, it would mnnn that the formor would be counted ahead of the Crimson in the final figuring on the standing of, the big eastern uni versity teams. It Cures Whila You Walk. Convinced that Pope Tius X will never be able to resume his duties, and fearing that any little relapse may incapacitate him entirely, definite steps are being taken at the Vatican today for the dologation of his authority to some cardinal, Bhonld an emergency arise. That the condition of His Holiness continues grave enough to warrant this, was admitted today at the Vatican. Pope Pius' own obedience, for the first time in Mb life, of the positive orders for repose, given by Professor March iafava and Doctor Amici, is also inter preted as ample evidence that the Pope himself realizes the seriousness of his condition. That His Holiness is still too badly broken to porniit of anything but a semblance of a resumption of his duties is also freey admitted. The doc tors have only allowed him to glance over and sign enough papers to prevent the depression of spirits which he would suffer if kept entirely from, the exorcise of his duties. Addod to this already sorious condi tion, Vatican dignitaries admit their fear of two other eloments which may have a critical effoct upon the Pope's health. The most serious of these is the rapidly approaching Roman' sum mer, which annually is fatal to thou sands, and especially to the agod. 8inco the beginning by tho popes of the "prisoner in tho Vatican" attitude to wards Italy, which does not permit thorn to Icavo the Vatican, even to es cape the fatal summer months of Rome, all of them have died during this period of the year. Aside from this the Vatican's cele bration of Constantino Year is another source of serious worry to the pontific al physicians. This had been Pope Pius' fondest undertaking, and he had set his heart on receiving and bless ing personally the thousands of pil grims from practically every civilized country of the globe. The present con dition of His Holiness renders this fatiguing work absolutely impossible, while, on tho other hand, the doctors fear that the disappointment of the Pope in not being able to realize this cherished ambition of his career may be oven more dangerous. For tho mo ment it has been hoped that this dif ficulty has been overcome. Hereafter tho pilgrims will be lined , up in the Vatican gardens and His Holiness will then pass by them in a enrriage, extend ing tho usual blessings, but dispensing with tho ring kissing. In the meantime, howovor Cardinal Merry del Val is making all tho ar rangements necessary for the delega tion of tho pontifical authority. Should this evontually become noeossary it is genornlly bolioved that tho choice of Pope Pins would fall upon one of tho three cardinals. It might bo Merry del Val, the papal secretary of state; Cardinal Tonipili, whom the pope re cently created his vicar for tho admin istration of tho affairs of the diocese of Rome, or it might bo Cardinal Dc Lai, perfect of tho Consistorial Con gregation, and to whom the Pope has entrusted the carrying out of all the big religious reforms of his pontifi cate. Should, however, a delegation of the pontifical authority become necessary, there is no one at Rome but believes it would bo for a very short time only as such a neceesity, it is bolioved, would bo quickly fatal to Pope Plus, who has stated repeatedly to his intimates that he would rathnr die than remain In a condition in which he could not longer bo of full service to the church.
