The state land board today took ac
tion in behalf of John Rhodes, a set
tler on the McKenzie river, in southern
Oregon, who has been unable to secure
title to land. Rhodes was informed by
the government when he settled on a
quarter section of land that it was un
surveyed.V When he applied for a pat
ent he discovered that the land had
been surveyed away back in the sev
enties and the tract belonged to the
atate. The board decided to let Rhodes
have the land at $4.30 an acre, the
price the land was worth when Rhodes
filed on it..
Arthur C. Brown, of Seattle, has been
invited by the administration depart
ment of the Salem Playgrounds Asso
ciation to take charge of the play
grounds this season. Mr. Brown is an
efficient playground director, and it is
believed he will build up the work
hero, if he accepts the place. E. T.
Moores, Miss Cornelia Marvin and Mrs.
Gaylord H. Pattorson are on the ad
ministrative committee.

avenue betweon the intorsbction of the
center lines of Fairmount Avenue and
Lincoln street and the intersection of

and Superior street.
The grades which are proposed to be
established by the common council
are described as follows:

feet above said base of grades.

struction of a re-inforced concrete
bridge over North Mill Creok at its in
tersection with Liberty street at a
point approximately 200 feet north of
Division Btreet in the city of Salem,
Oregon, in accordance with tho plans
and specifications on file in the office
of the city recordor of said city, which
are hereby roforred to and made a part
of this notice. -. Bids will be received up
to 5 o'clock p. m., May 28, 1913, and
will be opened on or after the 20th day
of May, 1913, in open council meeting
in the city hall in said city. Each bid
submitted must be accompanied by a
certified cheek in an amount equal to
ten per cent of the bid submitted, made
payable to the mayor of the city of
Salpm( which chock shall be a guaran
tee of good faith and may be forfeited
to the city and collected as liquidated
damages in' the event that the bidder,
upon an award by the common council,
shall fail, nogloct, or refuse to enter
