WILLAMETTE NOTES.
Following the suggestion offered by
the athletic council an amendment to
the student body constitution raising
the student body tax to two dollars and
fifty cents. The fact that the medical
school will probably bo in Portland
next year and this source of Btudent
body revenue shut off makes it impera
tive that some steps be taken to pro
vide tho means for carrying on student
body activities next year.
Another amendment was proposed
placing tU') Collegian on tho student

Best Medicines for Colds.
When a druggist recommends a rem
edy for colds, throat and lung troubles,
you can feel sure that he knows what
he is talking about. C. Lower, Drug
gist, of Marion, Ohio, writes of Dr.
King's New Discovery: "I know Dr.
King's New Discovery is the best
throat and lung medicine I sell. It
cured my wife of a severe bronchial
cold after all other remedies failed."
It will do the same for you, if you are
suffering with a cold or any bronchial,
throat or lung cough. Keep a bottle
on hand all the time for everyone in
the family to use. It is a home doctor.

A Screwdriver of Importance.
The engine had gone to pieces, the
screw revolved no more, and the yacht
of the millionaire rolled helplessly In
the trough of the sea.
Anxiously signaling for help was the
wireless operator. He was approached
by the owner of the craft "I wish."
sniil the latter, "that you would advise
my wife, In lirooklyn. of our accident."
"Snail I tell her the engine is bro
ken, sir?" 8ked the' wireless man.
By no means!" exclaimed the mil
lionaire "Those bald words would be
discomforting to the sensitive woman.
Send her a message which, while not
transgressing the truth, will make her
think, our accident is only a trivial one.
Say our screwdriver is broken." Judge.
The Hottest Stars.
The temperuture of seventy stars
have been calculated by Dr. H. Ko
senberg. a German astronomer, from
comparisons of the differences of ln
teslty lu different portions of the sun's
spectrum. One star. Gamma Pegasi,
seems to have the Inconceivable beat
of more than 400.000 degrees C. The
next Is much cooler. Gamma Cassi
opeia, at 50.000 degrees, but this Is
vastly hotter than Alpha Taurt, the
coolest, at 2.150 degrees. By the same
scale of computation the temperature
of our sun is found to be 4.930 degrees.
The hottest Btars are the helium stars
and those showing bright hydrogen
lines In their spectra.
Voices of Maine and Virginia,
Commenting on the manner of speech

"The pleasantest qualities of voice

enunciation, sweet lu Intonation. In
neither state are children taught in the
schools how to speak. The persons

Is It possible that a rasping, metallic,

FLEXIBLE LEATHER BOUND LIKE A BIBLE.
The Wake of a 8hip,
"Wake" for the track of a ship Is a
Scandinavian word. . preserved In dia
lect Its original meaning, as Professor
Skeats tells us, was that of an opening
In the Ice, especially the passage cut
for a ship In a frozen lake or sea, and
then, from being applied to the smooth,
watery track left by a ship after its
passage through the Ice. It came to be
used when there was no ice at all.
This useful word Is one of the nautical
terms which the French have borrow
ed from the English, although It is
not easy to recognize It at first in Its
French form of "ounlche." and It Is
still used on the Norfolk broads with
its original meaning of an open place
In the ice.

A year later he says: "It is a pleas
