State Engineer Lewis Calls Attention
to Her Having Cheap Power and
Transportation.
Eugene, Ore., May 17. The address
of State Engineer Lewis on "The
Problem of the Development of Ore
gon's Power Resources" was one of
the big features of this afternoon's
session of the Commonwealth confer
ence. Engineer Lewis believes that a
connected effort should be made to se
cure immense industries for Oregon,
believing that the cheap power devel
oped from waterfalls should attract
steel and other industries. It is his be
lief that places such as Salem and Port
land, located on streams which solve
cheap transportation problems, should
succeed in landing the enterprises., He
thinks that the new process of using
electricity in steel manufacture means
that plants will be located where elec
tricity is cheap, and no state has such
an abundant of water power available
as Oregon. He pointed to the fact
that Niagara Falls companies are rais
ing the cost of electricity to a point
which means that the manufatcurers
will be compelled to go elsewhere.
Oregon's opportunity is here, and all
that is needed is a united effort to
make Portland, Salem and other cities
groat manufacturing centers.
