Denver.' May 16. That the radium markets of the world will ultimately depend upon Denver, Colorado, for their supply of the most precious metal in existence, wan the declaration made here today by Rev. A. W. Forstall, S. J., who occupies the chair of chemistry at the Sacred Heart college, and one of the most prominent American scientists v. ho !iave specialized in the study of vadium. It is the belief of Rev. For ilall that the so-railed radium fields at ?!ontrose, Sun Miguel and the south western Colorado counties hold untold wealth in radium. The great question, said Father Forstall today, is to devise some method of extracting the metal and preparing it for marketing at 100 per cent less outlay than is now neces sary. He believes ho has solved this problem and shortly will publish full details of his proposed plan. The Jesuit priest has worked for years in nis little laboratory out in the college buildings. There is something of the ancient alchemist in his appear ance and nil tlie enthusiasm of ono in his eyes. He believes that upon re duced carnotite the world will depend for its radium supply. Carnotite is lower in radium conteut than pitch Mend, from which nearly all the radi um supply is secured today, but the car notite is more easily reduced und much more plentiful. Titchblend is found in exceedingly small quantities in Europe, mostly in Austria. Carnotite is found in comparative abundance in southeast ern Colorado. , Heretofore almost prohibitive rates have been paid to ship great masses of arnotito to Europe to have the radium extracted. Father Forstall bclioves ho lias the right plan to extract the radio active sulphates from the carnotite be fore the stuff is sent to be relieved of its precious radium. "I cannot give out anything now," tfaid Father Forstall today, "but I hope oon to have the correct solution. know I am on the right track( for doz ens of experiments I have made in the past year have turned out successfully, I am naturally compelled to experiment with very small portions of the ores in which radio-active sulphates are found, and of course, this makes it absolutely necessary for me to make many more experiments Bnd then work out a gen eral average.' New York to shut up the guides and furnished him with a large amount of money. The agent made a sorry boten of his job and the guides stood pat on their story, despite threats of criminal libel suits and jail. Partially Suppresses News. In addition to trying to head off the guides, the agent sought to head off the truth of the situation on the wires He succeeded only partially and secur ed favorable reports over the Associat ed Press. Two special correspondents, who would pe classed as "yellow jour nalists' by people of the Cook stripe. one of whom is now employed by the Capital Journal, caw that nothing was overlooked in the wav of a wire story that would expose the faker. finally Cook was so hard pressed that ho decided, foolishly, as it after ward developed, to face the guides at Hamilton, Montana. Ho had .secured affidavits that the guides were untruth ful, that they had told other stories concerning the Jit. McKinley trip and that they wore sore because they had not been paid. Hut the corroborative evidence was so strong that the guides' AN AMAZING AFFAIR Something About Explorer Who Is Again Seeking to Get Public At ' tention Through Letter. One of the best examples of unadul terated gall is furnished today by Dr. Frederick A. Ho asks President Wilson to appoint a commission to in vestigato his claim and that of Admiral Peary to tho discovery of the North Pole. "The future of my children demands an exposition of the unfair methods of the arm chair geographers in Washing ton," says tho doctor in a letter from hicago. "However, I do not ask the administration to defend mo, or my posterity, but 1 do ask that the men who draw a salary from the national treasury be made answerable for a propaganda or character assassination. Among these is Professor William Moore and others of the so-called Na tional Geographical society," .. Cook's Exposure. Cook, who has been in vaudeville, evidently wroto the letter to President Wilson to secure free advertising. He has been so thoroughly discredited that it is hard to understand how he can face an audience and repeat his "sto ry" of how he reached the pole. Conk a undoing was accomplished largely through guides who had accom panied him on his Mt. McKinley expe dition an I who, after he claims that he had reached the North Polo, told ol how he pretended to reach tho summit of Mt. .McKinley, and really had only reached the bottom. The guides lived In the Hitter Hoot valley, near Missou la, Montana, unci when they first ex I posed Cook the regular news services were nfrsid to handle it, fearing great libel suits, and so it was sent out in the shape of s ials and went mainly to newspapers which were already suspici ous of Cook and needed only some di rect evidence to convince them that he was an impostor. The New York Times was among the newspapers that used the first stories of the exposure. Cook was on a lecture tour and was raking in tho money fust when news of the affidavits regarding the Mt. McKinley fake reached him. He hurried from story carried weight and Cook proposed to bluff them down. Makes Pitiful Showing. Cook came to Missoula and from there went to Hamilton, where he told in a theatre, of his trip to the pole to Bitter Root people and a number of prominent citizens of Missoula. He got along all right until he started in to deny statements of the guides ro garding the Mt. McKinley trip. They were both in the audience and arose and contradicted him. Then Cook's valor deserted him and he retreated from the stage and made an effort to escape through a side door. It was locked and former Senator Joseph Dix on finally forced him back on the stago telling him ho was a coward to quit at tho critical stage of the game. Cook finally came back on the stago, but his attitude eonvfticed Practically every one that he was not telling the truth. He left the next day for New York, thoroughly discredited, and spent a month preparing his records. Tho Mis soula correspondent of the Associated Press went to Now York and helped him get them ready. How Cook flod from New York, was repudiated tho Danish Geographical society and be came a by-word is well known. His amazing nerve in returning and claim ing the attention of the public is oue of the wonders of this century. Some Delightful Gossip About the Pret ty Things Dame Fashion Has Decreed. Who could resist you in the froth of shadow lace, the fluff of chiffon, and the frivol of rose buds! A fairy-like model with these three accessories is built on Empire lines. The short bodice is of shadow lace veil ed in tlesh colored chiffon. The short, loose sleeves of lace are caught with a tiny wreath of wee pink rosebuds of hiffon. A girdle of wide Nattier blue picot edge ribbon loosely confines' tho short waist and fastens in front with a ong ended bow centered with a rose wreath. The skirt is anklo length of tho lace finished with two wide ruffles and an ovcrskirt of the chiffon edged with rosebuds reaches to the top of the first ruffle, in striking contrast with its chaste simplicity, but equally fetching, is a plain charmcuse of cerulean hue cut on loose kimona lines, outlined in swans down and girded with a tasseled rope of silver cord.
