The Improvement League will meet
Tuesday evening, the 22. Please note
the change of date, and be sure to be
present. The opportunity to boost is
now ripe, so put your shoulder to the
wheel and help keep Salem Heights in
the lead.
E. M. Law made a business trip to
Marion last week.
Friday was the close of the seventh
month of school. Mr. Dunlap's pupils
won the banner for having the highest
per cent of attendance laBt month. The
per cent of attendance for the year Ib
over 97 per cent. We would be pleased
to hear of any three-room Bchool in the
county having a higher per cent of at
tendance. Trie following pnpils of our school
made an average of over 95 per cent in
the county spelling contest: Elton
Thompson, Bertha Vick, Lena Tschudi
and Margaret Willson, of the fifth
grade; Flora Polley, Howard Sanders,
Norma Thomas, Dewey Krohn, Mau
rene Smith and Lila Miller of the
sixth grade.

Eloped With Postman.
St. Louis, April 21. After eloping
with Charles Schroeder, a postman, of
Jerseyvillo, 111., Miss Gussie Bundahl,
step-daughter of a Los Angeles million
aire, was married to Schroeder at Car
rollton, 111. She had been visiting with
her mother in Jerseyville.

Beginning next Wednesday seed for
the popcorn contest for the students
of the Marion county schools will
be ready for distribution from the
Capital National bank, in Salem, Each
package will contain about 1000 ker
nels, and the contestants must agree
to plant the seed on ground with an
area of not more than 1000 square fcot,
and exhibit the product at the state
fair here in the third week of Scptem
ber.
. A peculiar meeting took place at the
Hotel Marion last Saturday, when Kola
Neis, of thia city, and Paul Dereh
mann, a member of the "Merry Wid
ow" orchostra, chanced to become ac
quainted, and, after a short conversa
tion, it was found .that Mr. Neis
crossod the waters recently on the same
steamer on which Mr. Derehmann's
wife took passage. Both gentlemen
were unacquainted when they opened
conversation, and not until Mr. Neis
mentioned that he had just returned
from Europe, and the name of the
steamer he arrived on, did Mr. Dereh
mann locate a friend of his wife in the
far west. Mrs. Derohmann is now in

cently of the death at Cambridge,
Mass., of Mrs. Floyd Field, formerly
Miss Lillian Roblin, of this city,
daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. F.
P. Eoblin, of this city. She is survived
by her husband and two sons.

states that tho Oregon senators have
agreed upon August Huckcstoin as post
master at Salem and have unitod In roc
ommonding him for tho place. This is
practically tho same as his appointment
and Mr. lluckestein's appointmont is
assured. His chief opponents for the
place wore Tom R. Wilson and James
E, Godfrey. His name will probably
be sent to the Benato within a few days.

There has been Installed in tho
Catholic church, of this city, a pipo or
gan manufactured by Mr. Emmons
Howard, of Wcstfield, Mrssachusotts.
This organ was mado in accordance
with a special ordes of tho donor of
tho instrument, Mr. Howard is a
well-known manufacturer of pipe or
gans of the Unitod States, having been
awarded gold medals for tho efficien
cy of the make of his organs. Mr.
Howard , furnished tho Presbyterian
church of this city with a pipo organ
about ono year ago. Ifo hn been hero
for tho past two weeks, superintending
the placing of tho organ in tho Catho
lic church. It is a very superior or
gan, and the tone of it is of an excel
lent character. A concert will bo giv
en next Friday, April 25th, under the
supervision of Prof. F. W, Goodrich,
