(From and unpublished Journal of Trav el through Central America, by John E. Russell.) How can one doscribo morning in the tropics of Central Amorlcal It is a bowildoring blaze of glory. The Dawn," that in tho temperate zones, vlctrix of the shades, precodes the torch boaror, has hore no office. The sun is unhornldod, and tho darknoss in a mo mont bursts Into porfoct day. When I hnd reached the edge of the lako, tho bald cone of Momotombo, rising sheer from tho water to the very sky, was gilded with light, and in a moment the dark purple shades of his woodod Bides, rolling away, revealed tho deep scars of eruptions, made when ho and the world were young and frolicked together. Ah! thought I, you are very grave and ro speetable now; an excellent example, sinco your fires aro burned out! It wns bathing timo for all animated nature, and the shores of the lako were alivo with countless birds. I.nrge blue herons, white cranes of every size, (.'ab iding ducks anil gentle pigeons, they heeded me not, and, and my road turned up from the shore into densely wooded hills. . The world seemed a new Eden, untouched by man. Tho quality of the air was intoxicating; forms of beauty, delicious perfumes, sweet sounds, enrap tured every sense. Suddenly a rush as of a tempest made tho horso open his wide black eyes, and jumped against his curb. Then was a sharp chatter of voices high in tho trees. It was a flock of monkeys. How they came on! A wilderness of them. Swift as weavers' shuttles, they sprang from bough to bough, through interwoven vines. They swung by the hands, they dangled by prehensile tnils, they poltcd down dried branches, leaves, blossoms. There wore mothers with baby monkeys on their baekB; school boy monkeys; young lady monkeys; family monkeys, scandalized at tho general disturbance, and scold ing everybody. There woro old mon keys, prcternaturally grave, responsible to the community, burdened with af fairs, officers of monkey institutions and leading citizens. I jumped from tho saddle and hurled ly tying my horse to a sapling, watched their antics in mute amazement. They did not enre for my stupid society and moved away through tho vast Ceiba trees, grinning hack nt me; nil but one important fellow that hovered nbovo me, Hanging liv lus tan ami dropping down dry branches Thoughtlessly I drew my revolver and lined the poor Sylvan ruffian that I wns in his own treo. Tho sharp report rang out, and tho stnrtled hills threw it back in con fused and dismal echoes. There was a scamper of chatetring monkeys; I saw that my shot had told, for my victim wns slowly coming down, clutching at tho limbs with nerveless hands, until ho dropped into tho bush. My first impulse was to ride away; but fearing I might leave him lan guishing with a wound I went to tho poor creature. He was struck in tho brenst; the ball had gono through his body. Death had touched him; his hu man face was livid and his eyes fimy. His grent trouble had east out fear, he raised his eves to me with a sad expres sion that penetrated my very soul; then, to my indescribable horror, ho plucked leaves with which he feebly strove to stanch tho flowing blood. I seized my pistol to end his suffering, but my trem bling hand refused to obey mo, and in a moment, choked with internal bleeding, his jaw fell and ho was dead. I stood still, bound to tho spot, filled with shame and remorse, like him who did the first murder. It was only a monkey; so much tho greater crimo that I a man sainted on tho rond as a caballoro, booted, spurred, armed, should kill tho simplo forester in his na tivo wood. Ho, doing no harm, and ask ing but a little of tho superflous fruit ago of nature, wns a worthier citizen than I, who owned tho sheep for wool, tho ox for leather, yea, tho very worm for silkl I needed not his monkey flesh for food, nor his skin for clothing, Whichever way I looked I was convict ed without appeal. Myself condemned myself. I turned away and mounted my horse. Through tho trees the broad lako glimniored in tho sun, tho volcanoes touched tho bluo sky and birds'soared joyously in tho air, but tho beauty of tho morning wbb gone; there was a choking feeling in'my throat, the road before mo was a dry strip of sand and rocks, and tho cry of tho nincaws was harsh discord, and tho bunches of fu chsia, hanging over tho path wcro pur plo red, liko Mod. Our Dumb Animals THREAT OF 1 DELIVERY IN TASK TO CUBA BRYAN New Secretary of State Encounters Weighty Problems, A LMOST ut the actual moment that William Jennings Bryan step ped into his new office us sec retary of stute be was plunged Into problems of the weightiest possi ble nature, lie was uot given a chance to feel bis way around care fully and become adjusted to tbe new functions. It was up to him to act quickly toward shutting off a great act of probable lawlessness in Cuba and to smooth out diplomatic entangle ments between this country and Mex ico. In tbe first place, tbe threatened re lease of all political and other prison ers from the juils throughout Cuba was a matter of the gravest moment It bad deep significance for the United States. This liberation of countless malefac tors. Including even murderers of the worst type, would have prevented the Menocnl ndiiiliilstriitlou. which sup plants that of President. Joso Gomez on May 20, from prosecuting the graft ers who nre charged with liaviug loot ed the olllclal treasury of Cuba. This would entirely destroy the credit of the Cuban republic, since means of guaranteeing Cuban loans have been largely impaired by the wantou ex cesses of political grafters. In turn the United States would be held di rectly responsible for the credit of the Island republic through having a de gree of supervisory power over its finances. Secretary Itrynn won his first tilt with Cuba over this matter. On the Forced to Investigate Grim Charges Relating j to Mexico. so many millions are sold to have been given away. All this would affect Cuban credit, for which the United States Is virtually responsible. For a time there wns a grim pros pect of armed Intervention by the United States in Cuba to prevent the release of the prisoners. The phrase-, ology of Secretary Bryan's note of pro test to President Gomez was of tbe most diplomatic sort, but it conveyed an emphatic meaning to tbe Cuban government There was no expressed threat In it, but students of tbe situa tion asserted they could see a sug gestion that the United States abso- Low Colonist Fares Daily March 15th to April 15th, to All Points on Oregon Electric Railway from f OSfUW I tiitniK I muiwn 1 Chicago W8.00 rarU VilM St. I-otils ....$87.00 MIlnBukee.... $116.70 Mttlu ltock ..I2J0 Memphis 2J10 New Orlcnnt $IS.fl,' Minneapolis ..$110.00 Duliitli $.10.00 Kansas City $110.00 Oiimtui $30.00 St Joseph ...$110.00 Lincoln $110.00 Journal Want Advs. Bring BdsuIIh.
