The Governors' Convention.
Governor West, president of the Fed
eration of Western Governors, today
wired Governor Spry, of Utah, suggest
ing that the convention of the federa
tion this year bo hold in June. The
convention will be hold in Salt Lake
City. An answer from Governor Spry
is looked for this afternoon.
Governor West stated this morning
that the public lands question will prob
ably be the main feature of the conven
tion. He will invite Senator Chamber
lain, chairman of the public lands com
mittee in congress, and the secretary of
the interior to be at the convention to
assist in the discussion, and hopes that
the invitation will be accepted.
Against Cigarettes.
Sacramento, t'nl., March 21. More
than 40,000 school boys of Los Angeles,
in secret ballot, have asked for tho pas
sago of Assemblyman Kuck'B anti
cigarette bill, introduced at the behest
of the Southern California W. C. T. U.
It would prevent the manufacture as
well as tho sale of cigarettes.
Chinese Official Shot.
Shanghai, March 21. .Shot by nn as
sassin while on his way to attend the
opening of parliament at Pekiu, Gen
eral Sung, former minister of education,
is near death here today. The shooting
occurred iu the Shanghai railroad sta

MURPHY. At the Salem hospital,

o'clock p. in., Mrs. Sarah E. Murphy.
Mrs. Murphy was a pioneer of Ore
gon. She camo to this state in the year
1 SI 7 by ox-team across the plains. She
wns bom in La Porte, Indiana, nearly
7.4 years ago.
The following children survive her:

Green Bay, Wis., March 21. Eight
inches of Bnow fell hero last night, ac
companied by a high northwest wind,
which piled up huge drifts. Wires in
all directions are prostrated, and trains
are from two to five hours late.
: Cleveland, O., March 21. Kocked by
a 60-mile gale, Cleveland shivered this
I afternoon in one of the worst blizzards
of the winter. Several residences and
buildings have been unroofed and street
car traffic is practically at a stand
still. Reports from Tiffin, Ohio, say that a
smokestack blew over there, killing
William Hicks and seriously injuring
six others.
Toledo reported an 80-milo galo at
noon. Heavy damage is also reported
from manv northwestern Ohio towns.

The Story Hour.
Story hour nt tho public library for
older children every Saturday, for a
series of storios. During the winter tho
library has held an hour every Satur
day morning for children under 12
years, tho stories have been taken from
the good old-folk tales, from tho Ger
man, Norse and poople.
A series interesting to tho older
children, especially thoso from the
fourth grado up, from tho Head and
of Troy and Iho Wanderings of Ulysses
Odyssey of Homer, tho siege and fall
of Troy and tho wanderings of Ulysses
on his return from tho war.
Perhaps some will remomber tho
stories of Odyssey were shown at some
of the moving picture shows Inst win
ter. Tho story hour bogins promptly at
8:30, and will be interesting to the
