I ROSE MAIDEN There Is always great Interest when our friends appear In public to take part In the presentation of an opera or cantata and this Is one rea son why so much enthusiasm Is mani fested at tho prcsont time In "The Rose Maiden," which will bo given by Salem singers Wednesday evening nt the Grand. We love to see our own folks do well and make a good Impression gen erally, and Wednesday's audience will be one In hearty accord with the ef forts of the vocalists. With nil duo respect to the great artists whom at times we nre privileged to hear-It Isn't what we hear them render that does us the most good, but rathor what we attempt to do for ourselves. Not what some star can come and show us, but what we ourselves deliv er or attempt to deliver this Is what helps us most ot all. The value to Salem musically In having a choral society, arousing,, as It does,, tho in dividual effort, as well as collective unity of Its members, can scarcely be overestimated. The Salem Oratorio Society has been in existence little longer than three months, yet has been able to attract a wealth of vocal talent whose finished action will come as a -pleasant surprise to the many who havo not closely followed the work of the society. In its ranks mav be found many voices which would attract favorable comment anywhere. Ample demonstration has already been made that in things musical Sa lem may now stand beside her sister cities, Eugene and Portland, with an unbowed head. THE I). OF 0.1 IDE Total Amount Granted Is $280,333.71 In Addition to tho Standing Appropriations, In the house this noon the stato highway aid compromise bill drawn by the joint house and senate roads and highways committees, was Intro duced by unanimous consent. The bill seems to meet with favor on all sides. It provides for the creation of a stale road board to consist of the gov ernor, secretary of state and sta'e treasurer, they to appoint a state road commissioner to serve for an annual salary of $3600. The bill provides for a tax levy of one-half mill for stato aid in building roads. Tho house acted on tho appropria tions for tho University of Oregon and State Agricultural College today. The appropriations for the University of Oregon, amounting to $280,333.75, In In addition to tho regular standing ap propriations, went through as asked for. Tho appropriations wore contain ed soveral bills. There was but little opposition. Mr. Eaton, of Lane, guided the bills on the lioor and answered all questions ask ed. Incidentally, during tho debute, tho University of Oregon and Its work, and tho work ot the ways and means coinmltj'.ee of tho house were generally highly praised. Eaton, In a general statetnont ns to tho bills and the needs of tho univer sity, pointed out that the millage tax of lhree-',enths of a mill for tho sup iiort of the stato educational institu tions, and which would give the uni versity In round numbers about $.'100,- 000 annually, would not go Into effect until 1915. Ho (tilled attention to tha fact that tho university had not re ooived any Btato appropriations since 1907. Not a building had boon added to the Institution for six years pas', he said, and during that tlmo the attendance had Increased 200 per cent. The ap proprlatlons now asked for had been cut to tho bone. "The situation is this," snld Eaton. "In order for the Institution to get along at all It Is ab- solutoly necessary for these appropri ations to be made as recommended by the ways end means committee." Each bill was first considered in commHiUie of the whole. The main fight was on the $30,000 asked for a summer school and the extension work. Sehuebel's amendment to cut this sum to $20,000 was defeated. La tourotte, Smith, Forbes, Howard, Mit chell, Johnson and Carklns were among those who pralsod the univer sity extension work and throw bou quets at tho ways and means com mittee for Its work In economy. Smith declared that about $10,000,000 In ap propriations had been asked for, and that tho committee had succeeded In paring this down to about $5,100,000. All tho spoakers asserted that the leg islature would make a mistake If it cut down. Btato educational appropri ations. "The legislature should not be stin gy with appropriations for good roads or the state oducntlonnl Institutions," said Forbes. "If Oregon retains a nig gardly policy toward Its educational M 444 4444444444 44444 DO YOU REALIZE? That poor pnlnt Is worsa thnn no pnlnt at all? It Is ubcIcbs to put It on. Come to PORTER 4M COURT STREET. For the best pnlnt you can buy I at prices that nre right Institutions, It will soon blush with shams." Only five votes wore cast against this bill. The other University of Oregon bills to pass were as follows: $100,000 for now building, 15 negative votes; $50,- 000 additional annually for supiiort and maintenance, 11 noes; $75,000 for additional repairs and Improvements, 10 noes; $22,500 annually for medical department of university at Portland; $30,000 for extension work department and summer school; $12,833.75 to as sist In Improvement of streets abutting university proiorty.
