They; are learning to draw and would rather try their hands at a car toon than a new dance step. One of the songs of ""A Modern Eve" a sentimental ballad called "You're such a Lonesome Moon To night" shows the chorus girls on the stage as a sketching party, with noth ing to do hift sit at their easels and pretend to draw. With the equipment for artistic experiments at their dis posal they hegan to see what they could do with It. Now night after night they sketch away while the prima donna Is singing her song, and the stage manager has a hard time cliokinc the Biggies when some one outlines a successful caricature. Of course, none of the sketches are vis ible to the audience, hut the girls get a good deal of fun out of them just the same. The franchise of the old roml inch ' is replaced by the new municipal line expired in IfliVl. Two years before this a movement was begun to own and municipally operate the road :' when the franchise should lapse. In the iiuestion was made the sub-' ject of a special election. It was do-, feated. In l:w;l It was again defeated, in 1!HV the measure passed. Then , came the San Francisco earthquake and fire, all records were destroyed and the taxes levied were needed for other purposes. I Hail a Hard How. ; In 1!)7 another tax levy was made. This the court annulled. In June. 11100, the people defeated a proposed bond issue for the purpose. In he cember, lfluji, the bonds finally carried by a great majority. Then the banks refused to buy them to the amount of $L',OL'0.artil. Next came an appeal to the people and Individuals and wel fare organizations. Including some la l;r unions, invested, and "big busi ness," seeing the public spirit, swung Into line. During all those years, while the project was fighting for popular sup port, adherents of the I'nlted Hail- ; roads of San Francisco, anil that cor poration itself, steadily harrassed the plan In the courts. Finally tho I'nlted States courts held that they had no jurisdiction In the matter, and the municipal ownership won. In 1011 work on the roadbed and track was begun. Today it Is more Ithun half completed, ten cars are In !use, and only the erection of leruiin nls and extensions of Jlie line to the bay and ocean beach remain to com plete the prnjeet, which has marked the furthest advance In municipaliza tion of street railways In the Fulled States.
