HeHpotiillng to tho growing Hcnll incut of Intelligence, the ministers of the varloiiH denominations of ('lirlsteu ilnni have censed to preach bad tidings of great misery for all but "the very elect." Nearly all ministers, grsdii ntcd within the IiihI twenty yearH, lout nil their faith In the lllble an the In Hplred Word of Cod, In the theological BcinlnarlcH, where tliey were taught unbelief, under the iiainn of Higher Criticism; where they iiIno were taught to coiiHlder It honorable to Htultify their manhood by accepting onllnalloii nnd Hillary for serving n denomination whom! pnMlnlictl creed they disown linil despise. No Goepol Without Redemption. Tho essence of the (iospel of Christ Is that He died for shiners, the Just for the unjust, that lie might bring mail kind hack to lied i tut the false g"S pels deny that man ever fell from the llkcue-ft of lied, ami equally deny therefore that he needed a ltcdiviner nnd (hut hr bus a liedecmer. Such xpurlotiH piNpvlN, which leave out the Very cine and essence of the I'lvlue Message, mv false, by whatever honor hie channel they may have come. We limy bo Hiire that they are of the Ad Versary himself; for they make void tho Word of Cod, the death of Jesus fllld Ills resurrection, and Ills coining attain to give to mankind tho glorious Mousing and privileges boiiKht with Ills precious blood. Tilt True (.iospel, the "giM'd tidings of groat Joy, which ahull be unto all people," contains not a single word re spiH'tlnif hii eternity of torture at the hands of Are proof ileinons. 11 contains not n single- word which would dls credit (ho Wisdom, Justice nnd I.ove of (lie Father above, whose lender mer clcs are over nil IIIm works and whose Balvatlon -Is yet (0 be extended (o the ends of the earth. The True Gospel, acknowledging that htiiiuinlly has come Justly under a pen ally or curse of death, sett before the proniiliur creation a glorious hope. It proclaims, n Jemis 'ht, that the time U coiiiluif ueo tho curao nhnll lsj r Russell's rovftif," and when God through tlie MesHliinlc Kingdom "will wipe away all tours from off all faces." (Isfllah xxv, K.) It procliilniH, as Jesus did, n glorious prospect for nil who desire to oniH Into harmony with God; and a Just penalty, or ntrl0H, upon all those. who hIu wilfully against light and knowlcdgo and opportunity, it pro claims that a New Day Is dawning, in which tho Lord will give "beauty for ushes, and tho oil of Joy for the spirit of heaviness." Tho Truo Gospel Includes tho "Gos pel of the Kingdom" that tho Divine arrangement now is for tlie selection of the Kingdom clans from amongst men, to bo heirs of God and Jolnt-belrs with Jesus Christ in Ills Messianic King dom. It proclaims, the honorable work of the Church as the Kingdom of God by and by, to Judge, rule and bless all the families of the earth. It proclaims also that the number who will attain to this Kingdom glory Is limited a Llttlo Flock, to whom it will be the Father' good pleasure to give the Kingdom. (Luke ill, 82.) It exhorts the (linking of "our calling and elec tion sure" to o Hhare In that Kingdom. la Qoipel Preaching Logical f Let us notice the world's viewpoint, which catiHHS tho Gospel Message to appear foolish to them. To tho worldly-wise it looked very foolish, Indeed, for Jostis to go about ralestlno wltn twelvo disciples, performing some mir acles nnd Inviting chiefly the poor to becomo Ills followers, leaving business and other pursuits. "Ah," any tho world, "how Impractical was Jesus, and how foolish was Ills message! A business man would have laid a good foundation for his work by milking friends with the Scribes, tho Pharisees and tho Doctors of tho Law, nnd utiliz ing their Inllueiico with their hold upon tho people." Hut, wo ask, how then would tho Scriptures havo been fulfilled? Who would havo crucified Christ, or havo caused Ills death? There would have been no reconciliation possible for man kind. It Is well for us that Jesus did not follow the HiiggoHllons of worldly wisdom. Truly "tho wisdom of this world Is foollHliness with God," even iw tho Wisdom of (iod Is foollshneHS with the ( hlldren of this world. It Is because worldly wisdom got In Its hold lu the Dark Ages that the Gos pel has been perverted so greatly. Great human Institutions hnvo arisen, mighty and powerful, through man's cunning. Prlcsternft and statecraft havo mado tho professed Church of Christ one of the greatest business In. Ntltutlous on earth. Not more, but less, of human wisdom Is what wo need; and not less, but innro, of Dlvlno Wisdom and Instruction from tho ltlble. Why It Seema Fooliah, From tho world's Htandpoint it Hoems foolish that God hIiouIiI Invito nny to do right and to be Ills servants. It seems weak for n God of nil power to entreat, where Ho could command nnd enforce obedience. Karth's kings, hav ing tho power, would enforce their coniinaiuls; In fact, everybody, as a rule, executes his own will. How strange, therefore, It appears to the world, that It should be otlierwlso with the Almighty! The ltlble, however, gives tho Infor mation. God wishes to select a special class of special servants. To ti'Ht their loyalty, there uiiiHt be opportunity for them to resist IIIm and to refuse obedi ence, tied causes Ills Message or In vitation to pass on to others also, that thus lie may II ml the peculiar people who prefer to do good rather than evil to such an extent that they lire willing to suffer for righteousness sake. Tho special work which lie designs tlie Church to accomplish reipilres such loyal, faithful souls as these men and women glad to sacrlttce their lives In the service of the Lord, Ills cause and I lis brethren. The class He seeks "count not their lives dear unto themselves." Cod carries the proposition still further, however, and puts this special class to peculiar and seveie tests, that the trial of their faith and obedience, being more pre, Ions than that of gold, may be found acceptable unto Ills pleasement eventually. Persecutions, tribulations, attacks from the world, the llesh and the Ad versary, are permitted to come against these to test their loyalty. None of these things are what the world would expect; and to tell the world of these is to relate what seems to them fool ishness. They cannot see why conse crated people of God should suffer re proofs for righteousness' sake, for Truth's sake. Hut all these matters are clear and plain to those who are taught of God to those who have learned that the Church Is being selected from amongst mankind for n very special work of God. This makes It appropriate that their loyalty be tested to the limit, In order that they may be counted worthy of the "glory, honor and Immortality," which God has for those who love 1 1 1 id. By and By It Will Be Different. The Divine Plan outlined In the ftl hie Is different. The procedure under Messiah's Kingdom and dealing with the world will be exactly what the world will concede to be a wise pro gram In Unit time all darkness. Ig norance and superstition will Npocdlly pass away under the advancing light f the Sun of Klgbteousiiess. The way of righteousness will no longer be nar row, secluded and rugged, as at pres ent. God describes It through tho Prophet, saying, "A highway shall be there, and a way. and It shall be called the Way of Holiness; the re deemed of the Lord shall walk there; no ravenous beast shall go up there on. "--Isaiah xxv. S, P. Faithfulness will bring the Divine re ward of freedom from weakness, nnd ,f Increase of strength--mental, moral and physical. Day by day the well doer, walking on the Highway of Holi Sermon ness, will be coming nearer to human perfection. Thus will be fulfllled, through Cbrlst the gracious promise that "God shall wipe away all tears from all faces," and "there shnll be no more curse, neither sorrow, nor sigh ing, nor crying; for the former things ahull have passed away.' Many Stripea and Few Stripea. The Bible clearly Indicates that the Adarulc condemnation against our race will be fully offset by the merit of Christ's sacrlllce. Uut on the other hand, it tells us that every transgres sion which is not purely of Inherited weakness Is charged to the account of the transgressor and must be mot by him. Jesus emphasizes this lesson, saying. "He that knew bis Master's will and did It not, shall be beaten with many stripes: but he that knew It not and yet did things worthy of stripes, shall be beaten with few stripes." Some of these stripes, or punishments, may Indeed come to the transgressor in the presout life; and If so, he does well to prollt by them. Hut whether in the present life or in the future life, every wilful transgres sion will recolve "a just recompense of reward." The difficulty with our theo ries of the Dark AgeH on this subject bus not been that they taught a pun ishment for sin; but that they taught an unjust penalty, dishonoring to th Creator and stultifying to the believer. The Reeorda of Wilful 8in. It Is a mistake to say that Increasing sins would lncreaso tho pangs of con science and thnt thus each would be punished. We know to the contrary that many, as they becomo steeped la sin, lose all sensibility. Bt. Paul cor roborates this thought, saying of some that their consciences become "seared" calloused. God provided that each individual shall keep a record In himself of his own moral ohllnultles. Each violation of conscience weakens the character. Character weakened, degraded, can bo reconstructed only with proportionate ly great dllllculty. Thus some, during tho period of Messiah's Kingdom, will bo struggling against weaknesses which they brought upon themselves, aside from those of Adamle heredity. Tho assistance from tho (loyal Priest hood will be proMrtlonate to the Adamle weakness, contrary to the nil mnn will. Outside temptations will bo gone. Full knowledge will be there; but character will bo the thing of para mount Importance as determining who will attain everlasting life. Our Itedeemer gave a suggestion along this lino when He ld to the Pharisees, "noxv can ye escape the condemnation of Gehenna?" (Matthew xxlll, 33.) Tho Valley of Hlnnom (Go henna) outside Jerusalem, where the offal was finally destroyed, symbolical ly represented the Second Death, as explained In Itevelatlon xx. 14. Jesus did not condemn tho Pharisees to the Second Death. Ills mission to tho world wns not to condemn men; for they were condemned already under tho Adamle condemnation. Tho Son of Man came "not to condemn the world; but thnt tho world through Him might be saved." (John III, 17.) At tho tlmo Ho sKlie theso words re siK'Ctlng tho Pharisees, Ho was laying down Ills life on Mialf of all the chil dren of Adam. They could not forfeit their share in Ills resurrection work until thnt work had tM.eu completed and thry had enjoyed their Bhare of tho Redeemer's favor. The Import of tho Redeemer's words, therefore, wns that lie perceived In them bo much of dishonesty nnd hard ness of heart that He prophesied that they would have a hard time to reform character, eveu under the favorable conditions of the Millennium. They had seen the Master, heard Ills teach ings, witnessed Ills miracles, nnd must have been reasonably convinced that It was a holy power which operated In IIIm. When, therefore. In bitterness of spirit they declared that Ills miracles and teachings were Inspirations of Sa tan, they w ere well nigh without excuse. It could hardly Iv supposed that such perversity of spirit was the result either of Ignorance or of Adamle weak ness. Kvldcntly there was great wll fulness associated with It. Hence the Master declared that persons who could thus dltrlbiite to Satan things which they recognized as good, pure and holy, must have greatlv perverted their consciences. They will lie oblig ed to suffer stripes accordingly, nnd will have proportionately great dllllcul ty In bringing themselves Into harmo ny with the requirements of the Mes sianic Kingdom. "Preach the Word." All of God's people are preachers. The begetting Influence of the Holy Spirit Is the only ordination necessary, and without It no one has Dlvlno au thority to preach. Preaching. In Its broad sense, means In tltvlare. tn make tnnirn. God's Hook makes no division of His people Into clergy mid laity. "He that hath My Word, let him speak My Word faithfully." salth the Lord Let us declare God's Message In Its purity and simplicity, whoever hours and whoever refuses to hear. Let ns not be disappointed that the worldly wise will think It foolish, ns In St. Paul's day; nnd let us not be surprised If (he preaching of this Message shall bring odium, as It did upon the Master and tho Apostles. "The world know eth us not, even as It knew lllui not." God's Message, for all that, will ac complish Its purpose. He will tlnd the "peculiar people" whom He seeks; not one member of the foreordained num ber will be lacking They will all be blessed and holy. As Messiah's asso ciates In the Kingdom, they will then "declare the decree."
