How Doggie Puck
Played
Santa Claus
IT WAS tlio dny before Christmas,
and the sweetest Hiuells were is

bkcs were being left fit the door
every few minuted with loud ringings
of the doorbell.
Puck had never In all his little doggie
life been treated as tie had beon the
Inst few days. Nobody had nny time
for him.
When Daisy, his little mistress, had
gono out that morning, Instead of tak
ing her dog sue
had said: "I cnn'l
tuko you today,
old fellow. I'll
linvo too many
packages to man
age you."
Puck went to
tlio kitchen, led
there, no doubt,
by tlio delightful
odors.
"Get out ol
here!" said Brid-

Puck walked out of the kitchen up
Into tlio play room on tlio top floor.
lie crawled under tlio curtain which
adorned tlio bed of Frances, tlio last
doll to arrive from Paris,
Puck grow drowsy, and tho last thing
his eyes rested upou before sinking
into sleep was a largo book cut In the
shnpo of Santa Claim and colored to
look like hi in as well. The book con
tained tlio Rtory beginning " "X'wns the
night before Christmas," and Puck hud
heard Daisy rend that story only the
night before. What was his surprise
to sen that bonk straighten Itself until
It looked llko a soldier on paritdo, but
of coiirso it was not a soldier, only
Santa Clans, tho very being from
whom ho was trying to escape Suutn
Clans began talking to him.
"Puck, I do not llko to seo you show
such an ugly spirit this day before
Christmas. Christmas Is my day, you
know, nnd I llko every living thing to
bo happy when it comes around.
"If you want to get fun out of Christ

for yourself. Try to give It to some
ono else." went on Simla Clans.
"Mr. Sunta Clans," said Puck, look
ing offended, "nobody will allow mo to
help In any way. All 1 can do is to
keep out of tho way until your day Is
over."
"Nonsense," replied Santa. "You ore
all wrong. The festival Is In my hon
or, true enough, but that does not shut
out other people from helping."
Puck was wide awake and polite
enough to crawl out from beneath the
bed and I In en to his visitor.
"You know Daisy Is to havo n party
tonight," Bald Santa. "There Is to bo
a splendid treo with presents on It, and
I have mndo that tree tho handsomest
I over trimmed. I had planned to
make my nppearanco myself to wish the
boys and girls a merry Christmas, but
I simply cannot tako tho tlmo. If you
would llko you can tako my place. I'll
dress you for tlio party. If you will
allow 1110 I shall look around and see
what I can II ml in Miss Daisy's play
room. Good, the very thing. We'll
niako a hit!" And Puck looked toward
the wnstelmsket, where ho saw a false
faco of Santa Clans with Its long
while, beard nnd the remains of a glue
pot warranted to mend or stick any
thing. Santa Clans bent to tho ears of Puck
and whispered his plan as a secret.
Tho secret seemed to meet with Puck's
approval, for ho wagged Ills tall and
wriggled his body Just as ho did when
Daisy fed him a bit of his favorite
ca udy,
It grow dark very early, for a snow
storm was on the way. Sounds of ar
riving visitors came to Puck's ears ns
tho bell pealed again and again. Ills
nbsenco was not
noticed ns beau
tifully dressed
girls came Into
tho next room to
remove their
wraps, while

Tho voice of

ns this was tho cue Santa had given
him to appear Puck crawled out, ap
proached tho wnstelmsket, knocked It
over, rubbed his face In tho slowly
trickling glue nnd then stuck It Into the
Santa Claus false face lying conven
iently near.
In n minute the queer Puck-Santa
Claus ran down the stairs nnd Into the
Mom, arousing shrieks of laughter as
one hoy screamed, "Why, It's Sunta
Claus!"
"No, It Is not!" shouted another. "Did
you ever see a Sanla Claus with foui
legs? It's a dog, that Is what It is."
"it's my Puck." said Daisy, taking
the queer specimen In her arms, "but
how In the world did he ever get him
self up In this clever fashion?"
Puck was not telling, but the fun
this odd looking Santa started made
tie party a success.

How Little Jack
Guessed
A Christmas Secret
T was the after
noon before
Christmas, and
the nlr was full
of big, feathery
snowflakes. Jack
and Mary stood
at tho window
watching them,
and Baby Jane
sat on the floor.
"Soo how pret

J? ' cried Juck, clap-
y ping his hands.
"They'ro Just llko
fairies going to a Christmas party."
Mary clapped her bnnds, too, and
Caby Jojio thumped her rattlo on tho
floor and crowed. Hut Mrs. Brown
looked out of tho window rather anx
iously. The store was a mllo away, and the
snow seemed to come thicker and
faster every mlnuto.
"How do you s'poso Santa Claus can
get here lu such a storm?" asked Jack,
at which Mary's face clouded.
Perhaps this thought was troubling
Mrs. Brown. Sho didn't answer for
more than a minute, not until Jack
spoke again.
"Pooh 'n' nonsense!" ho said. "This
Isn't much of a snow. 1 could go In It
myself well's not."
"Could you, dear?" asked his mother
quickly. "I'm afraid It's a chance If
papa gets homo before tomorrow, tho
wood road will bo so blocked, and I
want some things from tho store to
night Do you mipposo you can go
with your sled, Jackie?"
"Why, yes!" cried Jack, delighted
enough, and In a very few minutes
ho was ready to start.
"Give tills nolo to Mr. Slmpklns,"
said his mother, "and then you won't
have anything to remember. And bo
careful, deur, and hurry homo as fast
as you can."
Mr. Slmpklns' eyes twinkled when ho
read that note.
"I can't attend to you right away,"
ho snld to Jack, "and I wish you'd Just
JACK STIinOOLED OH.
run over to the houso with a lino to
Mrs. Slmpklns for me."
"Yes, sir," answered Ted.
Mr. Slmpklns had tho bundles tucked
away In the sled box and covered with
thick brown paper, that tho snow
couldn't get through, when Jack came
back.
"Hard night for Santa Claus to get
around," he snld, pinching the boy's
red cheek. "Do you suppose you'll see
him nt your houso?"
"I hope he'll come," answered Jack
politely, "but I dou't guess I'll see him,
Bir."
"I saw him once," Mr. Slmpklns snld
soberly, "when ho was a littlo boy,
about your size, lie looked a great
deal llko you too."
When ho got home mother had a
plate of hot oatmeal pudding with
sugar and real cream waiting for him,
and sho whisked the buudles out of the
sled box and Into the pantry In a
hurry.
All this time the snow kept falling,
falling, and tho wind blew umll the
little house fairly shook. If It had
been set on a hill there Is no saying
what might have hapcned. Jack felt
a good deal troubled. He told his
mother what Mr. Slmpklns had said
about Sauta Claus when she was tuck
ing him into bed for the night
"Pm 'frnld he can't get here," said
he, "and then Mary will be so disap
pointed." But his mother laughed, stooping
down for the good night kiss. "Don't
worry, dear," she said. "Santa Claus
won't mind this little Btonn."
And. sure enough, when morning
came the three littlo stockings hanging
beside the chimney were stuffed as
full as they could bold.
"So Santa Claus did come," said Mrs.

"I do b'llovo I know what Mr. Simp

Buttermilk
Buttermilk will prolong the hiunan
life for many years. That assertion has
been proved by several of the leading
physicians of the world Pasteur and
Mitchnekoff, of Paris.
Inthe blood are little cells known as
leucocytes. Those cells are the scav
engers of the body, and in their con
cave surfaces are ahle to grasp a germ
or a foreign body and force its elimin
ation from tho human system. The
leucocytes, figuratively speaking, are
!the home defenders of the body.
Under the microscope the home de
fenders can be seen flowing along in
the blood streams. Sudednly they will
stop as though they sensed some near
danger. Changing their shape to that
of a v. they will penetrate the blood
vessel wall and pick up a stray germ,
probably a typhoid or one of the many
other varieties.
When a person wounds the skin
and tho blood runs, the home defend
ers niBh to the afflicted part and pro
ject themselves to the surface of the
abrusion, preventing the entrance of
outsido germ life. They give up their
lives to obtain their object, and the
hard lltle ridges felt on both sides of
a slight wound are the leucocyte so
tightly Impacted that their lifeless
bodies help form scar tissue.
As years pass that commendable ac
tion of sacrificing themselves so the
human body may live ceases and the
littlo friends of tho bod once known
ns home defenders turn into a lawless
element, ravaging the body they once
defended.
Metclinlkoff and Pasteur found thnt
buttermilk contained an element which
! prevented the leucocytes from ravng
1 Ing tho body. Experiments proved
they would eat the buttermilk in pref
erence to the human tissues.
Seems like a great singer should be
about tho happiest man; maybe he Is.
