CHRISTMAS FROM AN
ATTORNEY'S STAND
POINT Ity Judge V. II. DMrry.
mm
Of all tlio days in tlio year that
bring to tlio attorneys engaged In the
practice of an arduous profession like
that of law, thero Ih not one like that
of Christmas. Tho Chiistmoa time
and Its memories bring a sense of the
troubles which are naturally the lot
of one engaged in protecting clients
from being deprived of their rights
of property and liberty in tho courts
of Justice of the land.
Christmas Is a time which makes
amends in a way to tlio attorney who
lias an Intense feeling and interest In
tho cauBo of his client and desires to
aeo them successful in tho tniHt
which they hnve Imposed in his hands,
Christmas time brings to his mind
rlearly how difficult it Is to protect
the weak and defctiHcless from those
who fire endeavoring to overreach
them in business life. There Is no
profession whose members nre able
to discriminate between right and
wrong and tho efforts of people who
rteslro to prevent even-handed justice
from being meted out to tliosn who
nro entitled to tho protection of the
courts. It. many times happens,
through the technicalities of the law
that persons who are entitled to re
dress are not able to obtain their
rights on account of Ibis fact. If tlio
courts at all times would sweep away
the technicalities which tend to ob
literate exact Justice, and lueto out
laws appropriate and proper to each
case Instead of following old-time pre
cedents, much would be accomplished
1.1 bring Justice to all.
Christmas time Is a period of the I
year when attorneys and all others
Hhould deeply anil thoroughly con
sider the Borrow that lias come to ho
many by reason of the Injustice which
has been dealt, out. to man from lime
Immemorial on account of clans dis
tinction. An honest and Inilusl rloun
man Is the noblest work of (iod, and
should bn protected by attorneys in
their (lod given rights.

OhrlHlniiiH carolH as they went from
door to door, on ChrlHtmas Kvo, One,
of tlio songs told of tho bleak winter
month In which Christ enmo, a time
when earth had neither fruit nor flow
ers to orfer him. Then caino tho
verso:
"And 1 have not (It makes mo sigh)
One gift, within my power;
Tin winter, too, in me, and I
Have neither fruit nor flower."
lint the liiHt verso rang out clearly
and triumphantly:
"Vet let me give my youthful heart,
O, Llltlo Ixud, to Theiv
HIchh It and glvo It out again
To ut her men, for me."
True ChrlHtmas spirit was tho In
spiration of the last verse, for no
heart girt Is ever poor. It Is only the
"gift without tho giver" that is "bare."
Tho Christmas spirit Is grateful,
generous, sympathetic, and world-wide.
It is grateful for tho opportunity to
give of Itself; for material benefits,
for friends, and for the (lift that
makes Christinas the holiday and the
Holy I lay that it Is.
It Is generous In wishing for all n
wholesome prosperity nnd an abiding
happiness; it is generous In both the
thought and the spirit of receiving and
giving; It Is generous in shnrlng the
Joys and unselfish in seeking to re
lieve the sorrows and burdens.
It Ih sympathetic In making us moro
thoughtful of those less fortunate;
'more patient and tender with faults
and failures; more ready to speak the
cheerful word and extend tho helpful
hand.
At this season of the year the very
air seems charged with a power which
compels smile to answer smile, and
greeting to respond to greeting, Our
"Merry Christmas" is but the expres
sion (f our deep Interest In others.
It Is worldwide In Its desire and
wish that all mankind may enjoy the
blessings of "peace and good will." It
Is also worldwide in its effort to en
able all to realize this desire and wish
and to give to everyono tho oppor
tunity to develop to the highest bis
three-fold nature physical, mental
ami spiritual.
The Christmas spirit Is in truth tho
spirit of Hope, of Kalth, of I.ovo, and
of "Abundant IJftf."
WHAT XMAS MEANS
TO THE CHILDREN
It) Florence II. CurtwrlgliU
Christmas lickings by dlvlno right
to tho children, nnd if wo of older
growth would enter Into tho enchanted
realm wo must become as llttlo chil
dren ourselves, a qualification deemed
necessary to cater boiiio higher places.
What does Christmas mean to tho
child? Up to tho ago of bIx, tho pro
clous belief In Santa Clans makes
tlio meaning very clear. It Is a tlmo
of pure delight, unthinking and un
reasoning. Tho gifts of the Magi for
these little ones should be simple, use
ful and entertaining.
"What do you give your children for
Christinas'.'" I asked an older mother
one year. "Mine have grown as blase
as I'ulliuan tourists."
"Oil! I patronlzo the 5 and 10 cent
counters," she answered with a smile.
"Children love simple things that they
can understand."
Verbum sap., and on Christ mas
morning thero were scrennis of laugh
ter, In which the grown-ups joined,
caused by the antics of a tin monkey
climbing a string, prion fifteen cents
Including the string!
Older children who understand the
great gift that Ilea at the heart of
ChrlHtmas should feel the two-fold Joy
that comes In giving and receiving.
"I'll have that doll for Nelly!"
"Wouldn't Jack like that top?"
"The cute Teddy for baby!" said
little Mary, who was taking nie on a
personally conducted shopping tour
through one of our modern fairylands.
Her purchases included many splen
did toys but all for others.
"Wouldn't you like boiiio of these
pretty things for yourself, dear?" I
said, growing somewhat alarmed at
this acute altruism,
I "Oh! yes," answered the small phil
osopher, "but I haven't got around to
'me yet."
Nt the tlmo she had finished with
"me" I felt that thero was nothing
tho matter with Mary.
Children of all ages revel In the
Christmas spirit of tho home. When
I tho holly-wreaths are hung and the
j mistletoe bough twlngs on high, when
Mother makes mysterious trips into
that holy of holies, the front parlor,
when Paddy's lMickets bulge ridicu
lously and there is 'a look of hushed
expectancy on every face it is then
that tho truo meaning of "Peace on
earth, good will to men" conies home
to tho children. Nothing can ever de
prive them of theso tender memories;
in later years they will become the
savor of lifo.
Christmas often menns a season of
caro and patient, loving service to
many of us, but every mother who
fills tho tiny stocking will agree that
the greatest girt our queer old Santa
Clans the world can bring her is
tho rapture of Christmas joy reflected
in that mirror of truth and innocence
tho pure heart of the child.
XMAS AS THE MAYOR
ELECT SEES IT
By Dr. B. L Stceves.
Anyway, tho man who contradicts
himself may bo right
Thero Is one time In each year when
every ordinarily intelligent man, wom
nnd and child In this United States
remembers friends and relatives, and
that is on Christmas. My acquaintance
with the Salem public has been Bhort.
I hardly know just how to greet them.
I will say this, however, may every
human being In the Capital City en
joy and remember this coming event
ful day more than any they have en
joyed any before.
It falls to the lot of the business
man, farmer, capitalist and laboring
man to mako December 25 merry for
his family, friends and relatives. Ev
eryone should remember tlio other on
this day make the family pleased and
happy and then do tho utmost to aid
In cheering the other fellow. There
Is always a little left over, bo to speak,
and no matter how little or insignifi
cant, remember that thero are those
who cant afford a Christmas tree. Ev
ery buslncsB man in the city of Salem
should remember this. Give something
bo It ever so small, and rest assured
It will be appreciated by the recipient
and you will enjoy tho memory of it.
As before stated, I have been in Sa
lem but a short time, I hardly know
the circumstances In which the aver
age citizen is placed prior to the great
day of cheer and feast, but I sincerely
wish and hope that the 1912 Christ
mas will be a banner one for all ; that
everyone will be happy and that when
the eventful day arrives again, It will
find us and ours well and happy, and
the world looking good to all of us
May the people of Salem be more pros
perous and more happy than they havo
ever been before is my heartfelt wish
for the Christmas holidays, and for
all the years to oome.
