D. M. Young of the Los Angeles Record, In his criticism of "Nought and Paid For," during Its engagement at the Majestic theatre In that city, snys: "A scorching sermon of the times was preached nt the MaJeBtlc theatre Sunday night, through the medium of the Nroadhurst vehicle, "Bcight and Paid For," and It was put across the footlights with a punch characteristic' of that versatile playwright. It was at once a biting satire on the mode of living of the man whose Idol Is the 'Golden Calf,' and a reminder of that tragedy of the American homo, drink. If there was a man In that great audience who Is so prone to give himself up to the curse he may have Been himself and those who de pend on him mirrored In the charac ter of the piece, 'nought and Paid For' Is virile and gripping, though, perhaps, distasteful in Its candor at times. The story is of a poor hut ambitious 'Hello' girl who nifirrles for convenience a man of wealth with the inevitable result that, despite her baubles and luxury, she Uistes the dregs of unhapplness. Her wealthy husband Is satisfactory and pleasant until he goes on the periodical spree, then he Is changed with the thought of the 'Golden Gajf uppermost In his mind. He reminds hiB wife that he has bought and paid for her with the coin of the realm, and seeks to collect his debt, but she surprises him by leaving, preferring the humble life of the shop toller to the bird In the gilded cage. The cast Is an ex cellent one. The play Is well worth seeing." "nought and Paid For" will be the attraction at. the Grand Opera House, Saturday, Octiflier 12, 1912, matinee and evening. premises near the penitentiary which he was seeking to condemn for the Institution from his own fund or put It up to the legislature Is the problem which which Attorney-General Craw ford finds himself confronted. The suit was Instituted nt the re quest of the state board, nnd when the bills were forwarded to It the automo blllo hill was among them. They were turned over to Governor West to be paid from the penitentiary fund. The governor now refuses to pay this bill, declaring that tho attorney-general could have conveyed tho Jury to the premises by the street car line and that there was no necessity of press ing automobiles Into service and tax ing the expense up to the state. Attorney-General Crawford contends that ho consulted tho court on the question whether the Jury should bo taken In automobiles or on a car lino, and that the court decided in favor of the stink wagons, This explanation does not f:ct!i'.fy the governor. Tho result Is that tho attorney-general must cither tax tblB bill up to his own fund or go before the legislature and ask It to pay It. Which he will do he has not decided upon.
