miles of new railroad a year to the

day those who figure on the building
of new lines have to face two very Be

tlon of whether or not, with the rising
cost of doing railroad business, new
railroads can be operated at a profit.
The second Is whether or not we can
get the necessary capital. Under pres'
ont circumstances, tliere Is a grave
doubt about the answers to these ques

United States have slowed down
Most of us do not care to undertake
the responsibilities of spending the
money that Is now necessary to build
new lines, and then face the even
greater question of operating them at
a living profit.

the overage amount of new railroad In

will fall far short of the avorage for
the poat 30 years. No new lines of Im
portance are being projected.
