The basis for this estimate Is Infor mation gathered by hlin during a tour of both southern, and eastern Oregon, and should It be correct the roll this ye'ar'"wili exceed thai of last year By $1,000,000; the valuation of the roll last year being $890,000,000. Last year's levy was 3 4-10 mills. It Included, however, all of the appropri ations made by the legislature, being mode after its adjournment. This year's levy will be made before the legislature meets, and can not Include them, and . will therefore be much lower, State Tax Commissioner Eaton de clared that while there Is a law pro viding that assessors shall tax mort gage notes, that but few are attempt ing to enforce It and that his will re sult In a reduction of the roll. Herman Rietveld, of Portland, today prepared to fight for a share of the treasure valued at more than $6,000,000 now being recovered In the Zuyder Zee from the submerged wreck of the Bri tish frigate Lutln, which was lost in a gale more than a century ago. The treasure is In gold bars and coin. Riet veld asserts he Is a direct descendant and heir of Henry W. Van Dam, of Amsterdam, to whom he says the lost treasure belonged. Cancel Coal Locations. The claims were located by Mayor George F. Cot trill, of Seattle; Thomas S. Llppy, a Seattle millionaire, and otherB. The charges against the claim was made In June, 1911, and charged that the party had not filed the location in their own Interests. Rich denied Ills marriage to Miss Colin, claiming his marriage to Miss Jessie Ijiyton here last February was legal. The charge against him Is polygamy. Drs. J. A. Craig and Frank Smith will decide today whether to permit Rugh to sacrifice his leg. Everyone calls Rugh a 'brave boy" although he is 41 years old. Throe young men barely past their majority today faced Judge W. O. Chapman In the superior court and told the story of how they formed a criminal gang and of. their operation's here, and were sentenced to Indeterminate terms In the state reformatory at Monroe. Influenced by the stories told them by John Bannlza, the leader of the gang, the two other lads, Harry El wood and Roy Wllklns, were drawn Into a plot to burglarize Roberts' Brothers' grocery, July 16. Wllklns pleaded guilty to this crime. Bannlza and the Elwood boy admit ted freely to the court that they were the highwaymen who attempted to hold up F. S. Schmltz, a milkman laBt Sunday morning. In sentencing Judge Chapman show ed a degree of leniency. Wllklns will go to the reformatory for from one to 15 years. Elwood for from 3 to 15 years and Bannlza to from 4 to 15 years. O'lga Sfleeb, the young American pianist, whose rapid rise into fame and whose aensatlonal programs have aroused the Interest and curiosity ol the whole musical world, was born in Los Angeles In June, 1890. Miss Steeb's extraordinary gifts were first noticed by her parents when she was a child of four years of age At this time it was discovered by her mother, and proven by her father,, who Is. a musician, that the child 'bad absolute pitch, being able to name any tone or any possible combi nation of tones. Where she learned it, no one can tell. It Is as difficult to explain as is her most extraordln ary touch, her parents and friends saying that In the Mozart, Scarlatti, Bach and Betthoven compositions, which she had already learned before she was eght years old, her fingers flew over the keys with the same un erring certainty and swiftness with which they do today, and this state ment Is borne out by the remarks of the critics who sat In Judgment of her first publlo appearance In concert as a pianist, made when she was nine years of age Since she was but little more than a baby Miss Steeb has been able to sing a tune after one hearing.
