Willamette University opened Its sixty-ninth school year yesterday, and Eaton Hall was thronged from morn ing till night with new students and old picking their courses for the com ing year. The prospects seem bright for the biggest yeur 1n the history of the Institution. It Is expected that there will be at loast 100 Btudents reg istered In the freshman class, a great Increase over the class of 70 last year. Football practice began Friday, but the turn-out has been small, although it Is expected that as soon as the stu dents are registered the turn-out will be larger. Only four or five of the last year's team are back this year, which will mean that almost an en tirely new team will have to be con structed, with the alumni game Sat urday and the gnme with Oregon the 12th of October. The graduation class last year took Cummins, of the school of mimic; Low, from the lnw school, and Billy Tlooth-McCaln, last year's guard, Is going to the Northwestern. NOT CARRYING LIQUOR INTO DRY TERRITORY Advices have been received by the railroad commission from the Wells- Fargo and American Express compa nies In which they say that at no time In the past few years have they car ried liquor shlpmonts Into dry terri tory on the C. Tho commission several days ago wrote tho companies relative to that matter, saying that It was contrary to the law. It has also asked them to la bel all liquor shipments so that they would show tho name of the con slgnor, consignee, and the contents of the package. The companies say there Is no law on tho subject and express doubt as to whether they are nblo to compel this. While, as a rule they say liquor shipments are not labeled, all shipments from bottling houses nre labeled liquor. The minister thoreupon began using the loan negotiated by A. Wendell Jackson, alleged to bo representing the Stundurd Oil company, it is said, and severed relations with the "six power syndicate."
