When Mrs. Jefferson Lewis went to the State Fair Grounds to make appli cation for spaco In the pavilion, she remarked to tho secretary alio would exhibit bur paintings gratis, but not for prize money, provided sho could gut a booth largo enough. When urg ed to compete sho declined, and said she didn't need tho monoy and If she was to take It sho would foel like 'taking cundy from children," never suspecting professors, teachers of art from the universities and others ninny years her Benlor wore to compete for that same prize money. Anyway, Just ono trip through tho dilapidated pavilion convinced hor there wasn't room for her seventy- nine paintings, minus the frames. And If the press report was correct that there were seventy-three exhibits In art by forty-nine exhibitors, filling this department to overflowing she was right In her calculations. And when It kept up a steady rain all week she was glad she did not exhibit, as these pictures are highly prizod by hor, many of thorn being painted for proBents In aloud ot exhibition pur poses. Hence this magnificent and unique display was kopt In her cozy home on Twenty-first street, and shows she can paint any one or any thing she cares to. As a portrait painter her work is being favorably commented upon by not a few profes- WORST STOMACH TROUBLE ENDED M) INDIGESTION, WAN, HEART 111 HN OH DYSPEPSIA FIVE MIN. A few Hon heads fas tened to the sldeB of the cement urn, spouting water, would look nice, too. MM Make Want Advertising Your Banker I Journal want ada bring quick results X Mrs. Jefferson Lewis, slonal artists because, as one remark ed, there is a certain vivid realism of character, an Indefinable something that lends them a haunting sense of life. This group of portraits, which has nover beforo been soon publicly, Is mostly of relatives. Portraits of her mother who was Mrs. D. M. Wil son; an aunt, and young doctor, cou sin (mother and brother of Dr. C. E. Brown, of Portland), two beautiful eastern cousins are both teachers In the normal Bchool. These two young womon are in smaller paintings, brll llant outdoor scenes and exquisite In teriors. Two little nephews, one an editor's Bon and the other the cou of a doctor. The life-size Is of the cute Uttlo "Girl," of Cherry Fair fame. A portrait ot a handsome young wo man, called "Canadian Thistles," and a miniature of a bachelor, and then a real "Masterpiece " a life-sized por trait that Is a wonderful work of art in Itself. Having adopted hor own face and figure as a model, It is at once a perfect likeness such as would be recognlzod by any one who has ever seen the original. Her statu esque height, her rare command of ex- piession, her trailing reception gown and splendid Jewels, are In perfect harmony with the green silk portieres artistically draped for a back ground and which certainly make a lasting liuprossion. This canvas, being of such la:ge dimensions (a seven by four foot) has not hindered hor In depict ing breadth, simplicity and Just pro portions, a rare quality shown In all her work. Neither does she have to see her subjects or be taught how to paint them, her genius lies In her power to portray an Idea on canvas, then to give It an original name, like "Odd Fellows" "Rare Old Pals," "Happy Hooligans," etc. Pictures of British Columbia mountain scenery, figured landscapes of Sunny Alberta and Athabaska Indians from the land of the "Midnight Sun." Moos horses, dogs and cats, tapes try painting on silk and satin, sofa pillows that are not only fragrantly beautiful, being filled with rose petals, but are uique In design. Of special mention is a purple satin in Batten burg scroll forming the four letters "B. P. 0. E." the elk's head in the cen ter and each clock with tiny hands pointing to the mystic hour of eleven, unique from the fact of Its being minted instead of appliques lace (and Is worthy a copyright). Needle paint ing In embroidery and choicest lace shows Mrs. Lewis is equally expert In the art of needlecraft. When she re turns from her trip abroad she con templates erecting a modern studio, where she hopes for success In paint ing pictures, not only worthy exhibi tion at State fairs, but at World's fairs. And she will succeeed, because she is a "good mixer" a woman to whom suc cess cornea most surely for we all Plea for Civic Henuty. Editor Journal: The erection of the now Walte estate fountain seems to have livened things up in Salem along lines of civic Im provement. There is a greater gener al tendency toward civic cleanliness a more systematic arrangement ot shrubbery and better order of park ing, all noticeable the last few years. We are beginning to plnce the proper value upon our trees, flowers, shrubs and grass. A few years ago a man moving upon a new purchased lot for tho purpose of building a homo, Immediately razed the entire tract of all trees, shrubs and plants. Now days, things are dif ferent Every effort Is mado to save and protect all ornamental vegotatlon of what ever kind. In view of the fact that Salem Is growing, It will not d0 to put all our beautiful , effects In ono place. Wo must give different parts of the city some attention along these lines. A newly acquired citizen recently offered a suggestion which appears to be good. Referring to the Improve ment of DlvlBlon street, this artistic gentleman, suggested that the ditch be cemented, bottom and sides. That the top be left open. That an ornamental Iron fence be built along each side, and that huge potted palms, or other cuitablo shrubs, be set at given inter vals along the entire route. Lastly, thut fresh water be kopt running through the canal. An Improvement of this character would make Division ono of tho most refreshing streets In the city, a beauty spot, and create a highly desirable residence district. To cover the ditch over with pavement would eradlcato the artistic possibili ties now available, and bury It In tho monotonous sameness of its neighbors. Without tearing too much energy loose, we might think about what could be done with the north and south Mill crocks. Those beautiful streams could be artistically convert ed Into objects of civic' beauty. Some day we will straighten out some of cur crooked curb lines and level our cement" walks to a continuous grade. Next we will require the residence parks to bo kept clear of obnoxious weeds. Non-residents are prone to let their promises run down to tho detri ment of artistic surroundings. Port land cleans up non-resident property and places the cost against the prop erty. Good remedy. Hundreds of horses drink from the Breyman fountain every day. No san itary provision Ib made for the human being. I have seen many persons standing on their heads trying to get a sip of water from the drinking spout that turns the wrong way In this age of sanitary law against drinking cupB. Couldn't we enthuse a little bit more and get a sanitary soput on that beau tlful fountain? Some one who Is over burdened with tho principles of pro hibition, could donate a dollar or two on this fountain and save many a good Discusses Capltul Punishment. Editor Journal: As the electors of Oregon are by the initiative asked to pass an act to abolish capital punishment, for mur der in the first degree, and substitute Imprisonment for life at hard labor, at the election in Novomber, believing the passage of such an act to be con trary to every principle of Justice and equity, tending to the Increase of mur der, therefore impolitic, and that ev ery thinking citizen should do what they can to prevent such a political blunder prompted by false sentimentality. Let me suggost to those voting, through your paper some things to be considered before wiping from our laws the greatest detoratlve ot willful murdor. With the Divine and the human laws of most of the governments of the world punishing homicide with the death penalty, atrocious homi cides are frequent. Witness the long list of those sentenced to doath now In our penltententlary; by order of the governor, on reprieve awaiting the decision of the electors ot the state. How much larger the number of murderers would have been had there been no death penalty, no one but the All-seolng enn tell. What will not a man give to save his life? What will he not abstain from to the same end? No one will be foolish enough to claim that capital punishment In creases murder. Why thon oppose It? No more powerful doterrent than threatened execution Is known. Is life imprisonment? Interview those In prison awaiting the result of the coming election. Are they not anx ious that capital punishment be abol ished? Why? Because imprison ment Is better than death to say noth ing of chances of executive pardon. The twelfth census of the United Statos, on the basis of ono million population shows a larger number In dicted for murder In states wehere the death penalty Is not Inflicted than In states of similar size where it was, to-wlt: Death Penalty Connecticut, 11; Vermont, 12; Massachusetts, 13. Imprisonment Maine, 23; Rhode Island, 35; District of Columbia, 102, If llfo Imprisonment Is the strongest deterrent, why are attorneys for crlin Inal clients so anxious to secure It In stead of the death penalty? Indeed the anxiety of those seeking the substitution of imprisonment for capital punishment, goes to show thnt for the benefit of the murderer they would have It substituted. Pity for, and sympathy with the ono suffering tho extreme penalty of the law, and his family is the motive for this move; but whore Is sympathy for the slain and tho friends of the same? Put yoursolf In the place of those related to tho one atrociously murder ed and then do ns you would be done by In casting your voto, Droad as they must, tho escape of tho murdorcr from prison with In creased hatred for them and theirs In his heart, to exeeuto the deep laid plots of many solitary hours of con finement and you will vote for a law that declnres a man's llfo forfeited to society for taking another llfo. P. S. I see by recent intelligence that Ohio refuses to abolish capital punshment at the recent election 44, 726 votes. Let Oregon emulate hor example. 1 WM. M. ROBINSON.
