While general frosts were reported from Nevada, Utah aud Idaho, and a cold wave blanketing all of Alberta, Chicago and practically all of the Middle West are staggering un der an oppressive heat wave. Govern ment forecasters say there la no re lief n sight, despite the cold waves In the Northwest, as the hot winds con tinue from the southwest. Two deaths from sunstroke were re corded yesterday, and there were nu merous prostrations. Twenty-six per sons were bitten by rabid dogs, and there were many enses of horses fall ing dead In the streets. The tempera ture, according to the official regis ter In the tower of the federal build ing, went above 94 degrees, but In the streets it was above 100. There was a stiff breeze, but It was hot and stifling, and added to the gen eral misery. Of the 108 doaths report ed, a majority was those of children in the congested districts, and were due to the heat, which has continued so long that the vitality of the victims had been exhausted. Jollet, 111., with a population of 37, 000, Is In a deplorable condition. One of the nfinlclpal wells has failed, the machinery at the other two 1b out of commission, the municipal Ice plant la wrecked, and a car funilne prevents the bringing n of Ice supplies. The water supply is being taken from a creek well In a swampy district, nnd la considered dangerous. In addition, a strike of the electricians has shut off the use of the electric fans. Dispatches from the Enst say the effect of the western heat wave Is be ing folt along the Atlantic coast. New York Is '10 degrees hotter than It wbb yesterday, but no denths or prostra tions are recorded. All of the Middle WeBt Is baking. Dispatches last night from points within a radius of 100 miles of Chica go tell of much suffering In the small er cities and towns, whero the Ice sup ply is exhausted and wells are going dry under the long strain.
