his bandanna. The firemen tried to
clear the aisles, but failed,
Chairman Deverldge then Invited
Jane Addams, of Hull House, to the
platform, and as alio came forward
Roosevelt advanced across the stage
to greet .her. She bowed, reddened
and the crowd yelled approval. Col
onel Roosevelt then escorted her to a
chair directly behind his own.
Roosevelt then greeted a Hoy Scout,
who wived two flngs near the plat
form and then made an attempt to
f,peak. Just then tMlss Kate Suther
land, 74 years old, of Los Angeles, was
resisted to the platform by policemen
end reporters, and the Colonel greet
ed her with a hearty handshake.
After the cheering had lasted 30
minutes Chairman Beverldge rapped
for order, but this only served to in
ciease the din. Meyer Llssner aided
In. the tumult when he carried the big
'bear pole" of California upon the
stage, while a number of women sur
rounded the emblem. Both the dele
gates and the galleries were doing
their share of the cheering, and every
time Beverldge tried to secure order
he was driven back by a perfect storm
of applause. Throughout the demon
stration the cheering was steady and
continuous and devoid of those spas
modic outburst which always mark
planted" demonstrations.
Woman, Teddy and Dear.
For 35 minutes not a delegate re
sumed bis seat. At that time an ex
tremely prepossessing woman, Iden
tity unknown, appeared on the stage
with a small Teddy bear In her arms
and shook hnmU with the Colonel.
Then State Senator Funk, of Illinois,
the Progressive candidate for gover
nor of that state mounted the platform
and literally "threw hlB hat Into the
ring." Ho had an old felt sombrero,
which ho sailed out Into the audience.
After the cheering had lasted 45
minutes, Sergennt-nt-Arms Chniincey
Dewey and tho police began a deter
mined effort to clear the aisles. They
were greeted bya steady chant of "We
want Teddy." Mrs. Dhvia, who start
ed the Roosevelt-lladley demonstra
tion In the Republican convention,
was then escorted to the front railing
of tho balcony behind the stage by
eyer Llssner and the California totem
IHile. She waved a bandanna and
Roosevelt responded by giving her the
'railroad high Blgn." with a bandanna.
Mrs. Davis, eBcorted by Senator Dixon
then came to the platform and also
received the Roosevelt handshake.
Threw Kiss to His Wife.
Mrs. Roosevelt was found by Borne
delegates sitting In a box near a stuff
ed bull moose head which decorated a
balcony rail. She was cheered as the
Colonel threw her a kiss. Then the
delegates gave her the "Chautauqua
salute" with their bandftnnas. Mrs.
Roosevelt finally arose and bowed her
acknowledgments.
After the demonstration has lasted
52 minutes, the delegates and visitors
resumed their seats and a semblance
( f order was restored. A moment la
ter, however, another wave of hand
cli.pplng swept the great hall. At 1:43
order was finally restored and Chair
man Beverldge asked for quiet In or
der that a picture of the gathering
might be taken.
As the photograph was being taken
me of the bags used for smoke of the
flashlight caught fire and there was a
slight appearance of nervousness in
some sections. Three firemen rushed
to the scene, one swinging out above
the heads of the crowd and grabbing
tho blazing bag. swung It back and
smothered th blaze.- As he did so
small pieces of tbe burning cloth fell
into the lap of spectators seated In
the balcony, but no one attempted to
leave their seats. While this side Issue
was being enacted tho band played a
lively air.
The Hour and tho Man.
Chairman Beverldge's Introduction
of Colonel Roosevelt was brief but
picturesque, Pointing to the former
president, he said:
"Gentlemen of the convention, the
hour and the man, Theodore Roose
velt" Colonel Roosevelt advanced to the
front of the platform at exactly 1:49.
Congratulated Everybody.
Roosevelt congratulated the conven
tion on the work It had done.
"It was with real significance,"
shouted Colonel Roosevelt a moment
Inter, "that this convention should be
opened with music from fifes and
drums by men who faced death In
their youth. It was significant, that
beside them, stood men who wore the
gray. While I stood here two men came
over to me. One said he was a rebel
Johnny, that other leclared he was a
Yank. 'But,' they chimed in unison,
'we both now are Americans, both
Progressives, and we are facing the
future.' "
ThlB departure from his formal ad
dress wag loudly cheered.
Tan Kb t the Dosses.
Referring to tbe result of the Re
publican national convention, Colonel
Roosevelt started another demonstra
tion when he said:
"I want to say right here that I
think we have taught, the bosses one
lesson they will never forget, and that
is to be careful In future as to the
men they pick out to rob."
Colonel Roosevelt frequently de
parted materially from the set text of
his speech, Interpolating sen1 i e.Us
heretofore made by him In connection I
with "boss rule."
"We Intend to show," be shouted, '
that In the new party the national j
committee fills the function of servant
nml not. master." ,
Prolonged cheering greeted Roose
velt's declaration for the Initiative,
referendum and recall. One of the1
Pennsylvania delegates Jumped to his
chnlr and shouted:
"We have recalled Penrose al
ready."
"Yes, you have recalled Penrose,"
Roosevelt answered, "and we will Bee '
that you keep him recalled.
