K. Hall, who was appointed to that position, to got his business affairs In shape at once and assume charge of the institution. The original Intention of the board was to put him in charge September 1, but the amount of work on hand caused its members to change their minds. Burned Ills Hands August Thomas, who first discov ered the fire In the Toggery last night, Is suffering from a severe burn, received while attempting to close the shutters of the window to his room. He occupied a room over the scene of the fire, and was awakened by smoke and flames at his window. He suc ceeded In closing the shutters, nnd thus saved the fire from spreading through the upper part of the build ing, where It would have done great damage. The burns are not of a se rious nature, though very painful. FIEND ATTEMPTED TO POISON FAMILY San Diego, Cal., Aug. 2. Almost the entire city detective force was today engaged In searching for a fiend wo yeBtorday made an attempt to poison the eight small children of A. D. Rld gers, a brick mason. Poisoned marsh- mallows, each containing enough strychnine to kill several adult per sons, were thrown Into the front yard of the Rodgers home nnd one was partly eaten by Rodgers' five-year-old daughter. Only prompt application of anti dotes saved the chlldr's life and she was today declared to be out of dan cer. A hole had been punched In the marshmallows and tho poison Insert ed. At the family residence, 975 South Twenty-second street, this city, Aug. 1, 1912, to Mr. and Mrs. Frank M. Newton, a daughter. Mr. Newton lias been an employe of the Capital Improvement Co. for the past several years, but started In busi ness for himself yesterday, with the above result as part of his first day's returns. J. W. (JOSS KILLED BV PREMATURE EXPLOSION Last evening, while blasting rock for the state road, J. W. Goss, of Sev enteenth and MlBslon streetB, this city, was killed, near Sublimity, by the premature explosion of a blast while he was tamping It. The upper part of his body was badly lacerated and there were some Internal Injuries, from which he died shortly after mid night this morning. Mr. Goss was 31 years, 11 months and 2 days old, and leaves a wife and two children to mourn his death. The funeral will be held from the Rlgdon & Richardson chapel Satur day at 2:30, and burial will be at City View cemetery, The service will be conducted by Rev. F. M. Jasper.
