The department made the run, which Is almost two miles, arriving In time to render good service In put ting It out. The fire started In the hof uml had gained considerable headway before the department nr lived. Some damage was done the roof and the furniture was damaged by fire and water to considerable ex tent, amounting to about $400, folly covered by Insurance. Itnm Burned The fire department was called out lust night about 9:30 to extinguish a fire in a bam back of the residence of fleo. G. lllngham, on Mission street. It Is supposed that the fire was started by matches o r cigarette stubs thrown about by some of the hoboes who have frequented that part of the city lately. The building was almost completely destroyed, as the fire was well under way before the department was noti fied. The fire boys rescinded prompt ly and soon had It out, one line of hose ' from the hydrant being sufficient. Fortunately the duy was cloudy or the blamed thing would have run away from and lost Its shadow, unless It picked It up on the way back. This suit was Instituted after the Oregon university case was instituted, and the complaint contained the same allegations as contained In the com plaint of the Oregon university case. A verbal agreement was entered Into that the suit should abide by the de cislon of the supreme court, but It was never reduced to writing A week or so ago the time for appeal elapsed and the contention Is now made thnt the Judgment Is final. THE FIRE TRUCK TESTS TODAY SATISFACTORY The official test and trial of the combination auto fire hose truck and chemical engine recently purchased by the city council of the firm of A. G. I.otig & Co. of Portland, was made this afternoon by Demonstrator Plympton. Four runs were made to test the en durance and serviceability of the f I re flating machine, each of which proved its efficiency as a fire-destroy er to tho entire satisfaction of every body. , At 1:22 an alarm was turned In from the vicinity of the Lincoln school. In 8outh Salem, the crew reaching the scene of the fire within 3 minutes and 18 seconds. Eighteen seconds later the coupling was made to the fire plug, and 22 seconds after reaching the fire plug a stream of water was had. When the alarm was given It was nec essary to start the engine, It being stationed at Its regular position In the city hall. Four right angles were turned lu reaching the scene of the test, the distance traveled In making the run being l.0 miles. Other tests were made to the north ern and eastern parts of the city, and one was made to the U. S. National ban building, each of which was made in as good time as the first, and with the same degree of success. Hesldes the mayor, Aldermen War ing, Hill RIgdon and Townsend took part In the test, as well as newspaper representatives. All of the represen tatives of the city state that the ma chine is fully up to the requirements.
