FISKE RUNNING MA CHINE 40 MILES AN HOUR KILLS HIMSELF AND MURDERS YOUNG LADY GUEST. . Bertrand E. Flske, an optician with offices In the Macleay building and reBldlng at 6(18 Spring street, and Miss Elizabeth Toohlg, of San Francisco, who is' visiting the family of John F, D. Martin, Jr., at 861 Francis avenue, were Instantly killed at 10 o'clock last night at Portland when the touring car owned and driven by Mr. FlHke left the Base Line road while round ing a curve on the north side of Mount Tabor at a rate of probably 40 miles an hour. Five other persons were In the car with them, but none of them was se riously hurt. Among them It is re ported were P. F. Munsell, brother of Mrs, Fluke, and John F. D. Martin, an optician employed by A. C. Felden helmer. A man who occupied the front seat with Dr. Flske and Miss Toohlg, was caught under the car but crawled out unhurt The four occupants of the rear Jumped when the car left the road and saved themselves. Speed High at Curve. That the niachlne was traveling at a terrlflo rate of speed Is evidenced by the fact that It plowed deep Into the side of the bank below the road for a distance of 40 feet before It collided lwtavlly with a giant tree that stood In its path. The car was smashed almost to an unrecognizable mass by Us Im pact with tine tree. The two victims were squeezed be tween the frame of the car and the tree. Death of Mr. Flske probably was Instantaneous. The woman lived a short while, but was unconscious when thoso who occupied the rear scat reached her. She died soon after they picked her up. The party was taking a late run into the country for pleasure before going home for the night. They had been traveling over some of the city streets and evidently In tended taking a short spin out the Base Line road. The machine was un der perfect control and, although go ing at an excessive rate of speed, took the sharp turns on the road, as It circles around Mount Tabor, grace fully. Lust Effort Futile. What caused It to leave Its path probably will never be known. As it reached a sharp curve it failed to re spond to the steering apparatus. It wont straight ahead. As the front wheels wont over the side of the road Mr. Flske gave a final but futile twist to the steering wheel. It refused to work. In another Instant tho car was tearing down the hillside. The wo men scrcamod. The men called for them to leap. Those In tho rear seat had time to Jump. As they ptood up in the ton neau the car lurched. They landed on the soft earth In safe'ty, thrown from tho. uncontrollable machine rather than having jumped. The other called for Mr. Flske to jump and to save himself. He stuck heroically to his seat thinking per haps that he could stop the car and save the lives of those in the seat with him. He died at his post, his hands clutching the steering wheel. As soon as they had recovered from their fright those who had been In the tonneau went for aid. The body of Mlsu Toohey was taken to Holman's. P. F. Munslll, a brother-in-law, took charge of that of Mr. Flske which was taken to the establishment of the Skewes Undertaking company. EVERYBODY DISCUSSING TUBERCULOSIS EpresBlng himself as In favor of a state-wide campaign against the spread of tuberculosis, State Super intendent of Public Instruction Alder man last night, In an address dollvored before the tuberculosis convention, suggested tlis establishment of anti tuberculosis clubs, and tho spreading of literature with relation to the dis ease lu the schools would lie an effec tive way of carrying the campaign In to execution. Identified with the clubB, he de clared should be physicians conversant with the troatment of the disease and trained nurses. If such Institutions were established, he asserted, many cures might be effected, and much be done to prevent the Bprend of the dis The teachers and children In the schools could also be made powerful factors In the campaign against the disease, ho maintained. This could be done by spreading literature among them, and Instructing them how to take precautions against contracting It. Dr. Fulkerson, medical director for the Chemawa Indian Training school, was the other speaker, and he talked Intorestlngly of the fight being made by the government to exterminate the disease from the Indian tribes. It made Its advent among the Indians about 50 years ago, he declared, and since then the government hits been waging a strenuous campaign against It A few years ago the death rate among the Indians from tho disease was 16 times as great bb among the whites, he said, while today It Ib only five times as great. This he explained by tho fact that when a new disease first makes Its appearance among the race the fatalities are greater, suc ceeding generations becoming more or less Immune from It. A great deal was also due to the campaign the gov ernment Is waging ngnlnst It. He urged that the states take up a fight against It, as It would only be a matter of time, he explained, when the gov ernment would cease to care for the Indians, and they would become charges of the state governments.
