This Industry was founded at Alblna
In 1882, and the year following was
removed to Its present location at
Fourteenth and Northrup streets.
First It occupied a frame building
which burned in 1895, and was re- (
built In brick. The main shops are t
80 by 100 two-story. The foundry is
f.O by 100 feet, with sheds and ware-1
house attached. .
This plant is of great Interest be
cause lumbering Is the greatest In
dustry of Oregon, and the Information
that all kinds of sawmills, and saw
mill machinery and machinery .repairs
can be supplied more .quickly from
this plant than from any other source
is surely an Important matter. The
. Advantage of getting a plant made
near to the supply of raw material 1b
too apparent to require argument.
Anyone wishing to establish, en
large or rebuild a sawmill, will find
at the Portland Iron Works a compe
tent consulting engineer, a practical
and experienced man to plan the ar
rangements and give scientific infor
mation about the kind of machinery
suitable for the lumbmer to be cut.
Besides skilled draughtsmen this fac
tory keeps a competent engineer to
plan all general machinery, castings
and machine work.
The Portland Iron Works Is the
largest and best equipped plant of the
kind on the Pacific coast. The foun
dry can turn out a ten ton casting.
The shops are rigged with a boring
mill that will turn an eighteen-foot
pulley with a 6-foot belt fact. There
are an hundred lathes and planers of
various kinds, and especial grinding
and corrugating flouring mill rolls.
The Introduction of cheap electric
power has changed many features of
this Industry, as the use of Individual
motors is extending, and doing away
with about fifty per cent of the over
head load of shafting and pulleys for
merly used In transmitting and apply
ing power. With all the demands of
the times the Portland Iron Works
keeps pace for the high class men
employed In every department make it
a great conscious thinking machine.
This Is necessary because a modern
Iron and steel plant has to do thinking
for a great many different Industries
and their success depends on good
brain work right here at the start of
the equipment
What can be turned out here? What
cannot be, would be more appropriate
to ask? Let us enumerate: Sawmills
and sawmill machinery, special saw
mill machines, band and circular saws,
gang saws and edgers, gang edgers,
twin edgers and steam feeds, lumber
trimmers and lath mills, large timber
planers and all-steel carriages.
H. T. Clarke, president and general
manager of the Portland Iron Works,
started at the bottom, worked six
years at the lathe, and then took gen
eral management He Is a man who
knows the value of materials and how
to put them together. He Is a prom
inent man in the metal trades organiz
ation. Few men In the Northwest un
derstand, the economical generation of
power, the construction of steam en
gines and the transmission of power
better than he does, or can better
give to other the benefits of his
knowledge.
THE BACTERIAL CONTAMI
NATION OF BREAD
For a practically universal article of
diet, bread seems to have received lit
tle attention from bacteriologists. Us
ually handled by several persons, of
ten exposed to flies and Btreet dust,
sometimes tossed about under very
uncleanly conditions, baker's bread Is
obviously liable to pick up dangerous
bacterial contamination. It it is han
dled by a typhoid carrier It Is possible
for typhoid bacilli to be smeared on
the outside of the loaf, and since
bread as a rule Is eaten without heat
ing and very soon after It reaches the
consumer, It may readily be the means
of conveying Infection.
Lumsden, of the U. S. public health
and marine hospital service has traced
cases of typhoid fever in the govern
ment hospital for the Insane at Wash
ington, D. C, to the handling of bread
by an attendaut who had been caring
for a typhoid patient at his home.
Hinton has recently described a simi
lar occurrence In the Elgin state hos
pital where seven cases of typhoid
fever developed within a few months.
These were all In patients using the
general dining room for females. On
Investigation it was found that a fe
male attendant whose duty It was to
slice all the bread used in. this dining
room' had had typhoid fever three
years previously and was a carrier,
discharging typhoid bacilli. On De
cember 20 this attendant was trans
ferred to another department where
she did not handle uncooked food, and
no further cases of typhoid fever oc
curred. .
It is rarely possible to determine
with such precision as In the caBes
cited the articles of uncooked food
that probably served as the vehicle of
Infection, and we can hardly doubt
that contaminated bread Is responsi
ble for scattered cases of typhoid more
frequently than Is recognized. For
obvious reasons evidence Is more dif
ficult to secure than In the case of
milk and water. Kayser In his observ
ations on typhoid fever In Strasburg
found a particularly high typhoid mor
tality among bakers, possibly due to
their exposure to milk Infection.
In a recent number of The Jour
nal of the American Medical Associa
tion appears a paper on.the bacterial
contamination of bread which Is a
timely contribution. The writer shows
that under some conditions the smear
ing of loaves of bread may be very
considerable, reaching in the case of
unwrapped loaves kept under unclean
ly conditions hundreds of thousands of
germs. Out of a hundred loaves pur
chased from as many different shops
In the city of Chicago, 14 per cent
were each coated with more than ten
thousand bacteria. As might be ex
pected, loaves obtained from clonn
shops, where all the surroundings are
favorable, have not nearly so many
germs clinging to them as those kept
under generally dirty conditions. The
I difference between the bacterial coat
ing of wrapped and unwrapped bread
Is particularly suggestive. In no case
did the bacterial contamination of
wrapped bread reach a high figure.
On the other hand, more than half of
the unwrapped loaves (62 per cent)
were coated with over a thousand bac
teria. Eleven wrapped loaves obtain
ed from clean shops bore on the aver
age only 371 bacteria each.
It Is said to be difficult to obtain a
sole for wrapped loaves In certain
city districts, where the- prospective
purchasers Insist on testing the qual
ity of the bread by pinching the loaf
with thumb and finger! Unpleasant
'possibilities are suggested by such
facts. Is It not worth while to take
some pains to prevent the contamina
tion of bread? Journal American
