Palto Alto, Cal., July 11 Victor
Morris Smith, holder of the world's
amateur aeroplane speed record, was
Killed here this afternoon.
Smith, who was a 20-year-old
Stanford student, and was making an
exhibition flight from Mountain View
to Palo Alto when a gust of wind
capsized his machine. He plunged
7.' feet to earth and was instantly
killed.
Smith was a son of Victor Morris
Smith, Sr., the millionaire president
of the Western Meat company, of
Kan Francisco.
Young Smith, who was In his sec
ond year of an engineering course at
Stanford, started out today to make
a flight In his 50-horse power Curtiss
bt-plane from Mountain View to Palo
Alto and w as" nearing the university
town when the gust of wind which
tipped his machine came. The boy
plunged down and landed In a prune
orchard, ' nearly every bone in his
body being broken. He was dead
when picked up by some of the 500
persons who witnessed his fall.
The machine was smashed to flind
ers. The dead aeronaut was considered
one of the most daring of any devel
oped on the Pacific coast of late
years. Recently he broke all ama
teur aviation speed records in a
flight at San Diego.
